5th Grade - A Review of a Week of Learning!
Language Arts - We have had a lot of time to redo assignments and revisit work that wasn't completed well the first time around. In addition to that, we have worked on our first real big writing of the year, our Personal Narratives. We have focused on one moment in our lives and tried to add as much description and emotion as possible. They should be completed next week and coming home soon!
Next week will be back to a normal Wonders week!
Social Studies - First part of the week, students have worked on learning about the division of power between Federal, State, and Local governments. Though it was difficult for students, we learned a lot about how government functions in the United States. The latter part of the week we focused on the different branches of the federal government. This will continue next week. I will notify students when this quiz will be coming up about the branches of government!

Social Studies - We have been hard at work at our proposals to improve Mackinac Island. We have made models, powerpoints, speeches, and skits to present our proposed changes. This project-based learning is a great way to hit Social Studies standards while learning important skills like presenting, improving your community, and learning about our hometown.
We also had a great discussion on Thursday about a wide range of issues about evidence and good sources. We also talked a bit about cavemen (like Otzi), dinosaurs, and geology.
Arch Rock Controversy - We heard back from the State Park! Phil Porter sent our students a letter and an email explaining facts about Arch Rock's stability. Please ask to see the email your child took home and ask them about what we found out! Also, make sure to ask them what makes a source reliable or not.
Upcoming Dates...
- Fall Foot Race - Need helpers with water stations! Contact office if you can help - October 27th

- Parent/Teacher Conferences (Half Day) - November 7th
As always, make sure to check your student's planner to double check that dates and times haven't changed!
