Announcements
Welcome back!! I hope you enjoyed your Spring Break!! It is hard to believe we are beginning the last leg of 5th grade, and promotion is right around the corner! With that in mind, there are two important papers that need to be returned to school this week:
1. 5th Grade t-shirt order forms are due this Friday, April 14th. Many of you already turned in orders before Spring Break, but 4/14 is the final day.
2. 6th Grade elective course selection forms are also due this Friday, April 14th. If your child is slated to go to San Elijo Middle School, a light purple form was sent home last week with information about electives your child can choose for 6th grade. If you did not receive a purple form, it generally means that your child is not slated to go to SEMS. You should check with your home middle school to find out what forms should be completed for enrollment. If you believe you SHOULD have received a purple form but didn't, please contact SEMS for clarification. If you DID receive a purple form, it means that your child is currently on the SEMS roster for next year. If you know you will NOT be attending SEMS next year, please contact SEMS directly.
Please visit the SEMS (or your child's middle school) website regularly. There are informational meetings scheduled for 5th grade parents during the Spring. These are scheduled and run by the middle schools - not by LCM - so it is important to check the website for upcoming dates. The meetings are a good source of information for everything from middle school pick-up/drop-off procedures, to bell schedules, to course offerings, summer registration/orientation dates, etc.
5th grade students will be visiting the middle school later this Spring to take a tour of the school. Middle School field trips are generally held in June, so I will let you know when our visit is scheduled.
Academic Updates
Math
Language Arts
Science
Our Science unit is aligned with our Language Arts unit and focuses on Water and Weather. I hope your students have told you about the water cycle and the demonstration we did in class last week using a 1 liter bottle as a scale model of all the water on Earth. To discover that the water in lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds (accessible fresh water sources) amounts to 4 drops out of the 1 liter bottle was a pretty shocking and interesting discovery!
Your students have learned some basic information about some severe weather phenomena (hurricanes, blizzards, and tornadoes.) This week, they will be adding to their understanding by researching a severe weather phenomenon and writing an informational essay about it.
