Dake Junior High School
DECEMBER - JANUARY 2021 NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Dake Families,
November was another busy month at Dake. During a month focused on gratitude, we have so much to be thankful for. We are thankful for the collaborative partnership between faculty, staff, families, and students, as we continue to support students with academic and social-emotional learning. Our PTSA and Student Government hosted a food drive to benefit the Irondequoit Community Cupboard. Thank you to everyone who donated non-perishable food items. Our Dake Musical, “A Year with Frog and Toad,”was a huge success. We have a lot to look forward to in December. Winter sports have begun and our Dake music groups will be holding a variety of performances throughout the month.
We continue to revisit our community values and school expectations through morning announcements and in classes. Our community values are:
Mutual Respect: We care about each other as human beings.
Shared Pride: What we are doing is worthwhile and we celebrate our accomplishments and our school.
Shared Purpose: Our goal is learning - helping each person to make the most of their talent and potential.
Mutual Support: We help each other!
Our next Parent/Principal Collaborative Conversation will be Wednesday, Dec. 8th via Zoom and will focus on acceleration and course registration. Due to the different offerings, the sessions will be split by grade level. The sessions will be facilitated by Ms. Maryanne Heiman, Dake Principal, and Ms. Colleen Graham, one of Dake’s counselors.
5:30-6 PM: Current 8th grade Informational Session (Due to the Treble Chorus concert that evening, the time has been changed to 5:30 p.m.)

Just a reminder that morning announcements are shared daily with students and include important information such as meeting announcements and general reminders. You can also view these on our Dake website under “Quick Links” and “Announcements.”
On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, thank you for your continued support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions. We hope you continue to have a safe and healthy holiday season. Take care.
Happy Holidays,
Maryanne Heiman

MIRRORS, WINDOWS AND DOORS – OH MY
Here in West Irondequoit, we are committed to creating a learning environment in which every student feels connected, welcomed, and included. One way we are working to accomplish this is through the concept of ensuring that school experiences provide all students with “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors.”
- “Mirrors” are experiences in which students see themselves and can make personal connections.
- “Windows” are opportunities for students to learn about experiences and perspectives different than their own.
- “Sliding glass doors” provide students the opportunity step into a perspective or experience different from their own.
Here is an example: The West Irondequoit Foundation helped us purchase classroom sets of play dolls and food that align with the diverse representation of our community. Another example: Our teachers are making a concerted effort to choose read-aloud texts that represent our diverse population. Some third-grade teachers are reading the book, “Wonder.” As a result of this text, the class has engaged in rich conversations about people with different abilities and how important it is to be aware and inclusive of their peers.
We are dedicated to bringing this concept to life in all of our classrooms! (Written by Kim Cristal, Director of Humanities)
