5th Grade News
Welcome to the 5th Grade Cafe!
Reading
This week in reading we have grown tremendously with our reading stamina and we will continue to push towards reaching our goal! As teachers we have been meeting with students one on one to get to know them as readers. We have been focusing on thinking about reading and discussing what make a strong reader's response. Today, we looked at exemplar responses and talked about what the readers did well. Responding to our reading is more than just taking notes about what is happening, but thinking deeper and analyzing characters, situations, and setting.
Math
This week we reviewed place value from the millions place to the thousandths place. We practiced multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10. We ended our week by checking with a formative assessment. This is designed to see where each individual student is at and how to move forward. These are not reflected on report cards, only used for instruction.
Homework
It is an expectation that students are reading for 30 minutes each day. They will fill in their calendars when we return on Tuesday.

Writing
This week in writing we practiced building stamina and staying focused in our writing for an extended period of time. The kids were able to write about anything they wanted and used the 50 things I love activity to generate ideas.
Teambuilding: Team Story!
iReady
This week we took the iReady Reading and Math assessment. Some students still need to finish, but most are done! The students will start next week with individualized lessons at their independent reading level.
Curriculum Night
If you were not able to attend curriculum night, please look in your child's Friday Folder for some important papers.

Please look for the email from Mr. Payne regarding 5th grade band. If you did not receive the email, please look at the attachments from the skyward email for this newsletter.
A Peek Into Next Week
Reading: We will continue to improve our writing about our reading. In order to have a strong reader's response, the students need to think analytically about their reading. Now that we have built stamina, we will be conferencing with individual students or small groups.
Math: Next week we will apply our learning of multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10 to the metric system.
Writing: Next week will begin a narrative story based on the ideas that we generate. We will focus on choosing a "seed" story and incorporating descriptive language.
