Senior Graduation Project: Beach Clean-Up on Bear Island
Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and snacks. It is a three-hour event! Please come early to check in. Please come support Hammocks Beach State Park, and the environment.

CCCC Fall Fest October 2nd
We will have students go through the OCS cafeteria line first, then they can go to Fall Fest! We will all come back and resume our third period classes (with full bellies)!
October 8th is a regular instructional day!
Juniors will also have class on October 8th as well. Your instructors should provide specific information for any make-up assignments associated with lost instructional time due to Hurricane Dorian.
Key Club
If your son/daughter is interested in joining Key Club, please be sure to send in the $13.50 fee for club dues by October 14. Club fees are to purchase the charter for the club, and also to get the support of our Kiwanis Club Advisor here in Jacksonville. Please make payments to OECHS.

Drama
Students received their scripts today for "Don't Try and Wake Him, Hand Me the Shovel." Please make sure they begin memorizing their lines! We begin our formal practices on Fri. October 11.
English
English I Honors: This week, students finished up Unit #3, Poetry. They completed their unit tests this Friday, and their explication essays were due at 11:59 P.M. On Monday, students will begin their analysis of Epic Poetry, with the work of Homer and The Odyssey. We will begin our analysis of Greek Mythology along with this unit, starting Monday.
English IV Honors: In English IV, students finished our comprehensive study of The Canterbury Tales, specifically Chaucer’s satirical characterization. In addition, students reviewed ACT prep vocabulary units 1-10. Our final major writing assignments will be combined and will focus on Chaucer’s satirical characterization. Prior to completing a comparative analysis essay, students will complete an annotated bibliography of research information. The essay will be due on October 11, 2019.
Regarding the Graduation Project: Students have had the required forms since the beginning of the semester. The six-week grading period and several students are still missing forms. The zero for the missing items will be replaced when the forms are submitted.
There are a few students who have yet to secure a mentor. The final due date for all forms, products, and mentor log is November 26, and presentations will take place on December 5th. Please help your child manage his or her time to ensure they are prepared to complete this task in a timely manner.
Math
Honors Math 2: Next week students will continue studying Unit 3 Advanced Functions. Monday students will have group assessment on radical equations and function transformations. On Friday students will have a test on all of Unit 3.
Honors Math 4: We have started working on Trigonometry by covering an introduction to angles. This coming week we will become familiar with the six trig functions, create a special angles chart, and work on right triangle trigonometry. We will have a short quiz Tuesday on Angles and Trig Functions, and another quiz covering Solving Right Triangles and Right Triangle Applications Thursday. Friday we will start looking at the graphs of the trig functions.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics Honors: This week we have finished our study on the Philosophy of the Constitution. We started our week with a test (not the best way to start a Monday), but they did great! We are starting to slowly add more writing into our tests to practice how to write well using historical evidences to support their answers.
This week we discussed how the French and Indian War contributed to the end of Salutary Neglect and the subsequent rebellion against Britain. We also talked about how the Enlightenment influenced the Declaration of Independence.
Next week we have final Philosophy test on TUESDAY. Monday we will look at Common Sense and do an activity with the Declaration of Independence. On Wednesday we will start our next unit on the process it took for our Founding Fathers to write the Constitution.
AP World History: This week we have been busy working on our project- Autopsy of an Empire. Students brought their Greece and Rome research and as a group began working on a poster to depict the major characteristics of their chosen civilization and what led to the ultimate downfall of that civilization. Their posters are looking great!
B Day will have their last day of classwork on their posters on Monday- their final posters will be due at the start of class on Wednesday. A Day's posters are due at the beginning of class on Tuesday- they had their final classwork day on Friday. Next week we will begin our next unit titled The Global Tapestry, beginning with developments in East Asia (c. 1200-1450).
American History I Honors: We have completed Unit II: The New Nation. We reviewed Early American Politics, The Jefferson Presidency, & The War of 1812. We will test on Monday. All Unit II work is to be completed by the beginning of class. Students have essays due at that time also.
Science
Chem Honors: Students are working on finishing up Unit 5, chemical nomenclature along with Emperical & Molecular formulas. There will be a test on Tuesday (10/1) for Unit 5 and then we will move into Unit 6.
APES: Students are finishing Unit 2: Biodiversity. Island Biogeography Labs are due at the beginning of the week and B day has Unit 2 Test on Monday. We will begin Unit 3: Populations next.
Biology Honors: This week the students were introduced to genetics and then used their inherited intelligence to delve deeper into human genetics, where they learned about sex linked traits, polygenic inheritance, pedigrees, blood typing, Karyotypes Syndromes, etc.
Next week we will be learning about the discovery of DNA and cracking the code of life. The students will see that scientists are not always courteous and polite. Some will do underhanded things to advance the scientific field.
