Week in Review
Reading:
- Character feelings vs. character traits
- feelings are how a character feels, feelings can change quickly throughout the story
- traits are how a character acts, personality traits
- internal vs. external traits
- internal traits are personality traits, how a character acts (nice, bossy, rude, thoughtful)
- external traits are physical traits, what we see on the outside (tall, glasses, blue shirt)
Writing:
- began our realistic fiction unit
- Realistic Fiction is a made up story that could happen in real life - has character that are people, a realistic setting, a real problem and a realistic solution
- began building our character and their background
Word Study:
- Closed Syllable Exceptions - the vowels make their long sound, but are closed in by consonants - old - cold, ost - post, ind - find, ild - wild, olt - colt - these are also glued sounds review
Grammar:
- Possessive Nouns - shows possession - we add an 's to make a singular noun possessive (Mrs. Gallo's book)
- We had an ' after the s to make a plural noun possessive (birds' nests)
Math:
- counting up and counting back strategies
- -0 and -1 subtraction strategies
- using doubles to subtract
- going-through-10 strategy
Social Studies: Formation of an American Identity
- learned about the Wampanoag Tribe and what a child's life was like
- learned about the Pilgrims and what a pilgrim child's life was like
- Compared Wampanoag and Pilgrims
Science: Physical Science
- Cooling - how matter changes when it is cooled (liquid water turns into solid ice)
- Heating - how mater changes when it is heated up (solid ice turn to liquid water
