Talley Street Update
May 26, 2020
From the Principal
Dear Talley Street Community,
I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. Next Monday, June 1st, will be the day for parents/guardians to pick up their child’s belongings that were left in the classrooms and lockers. The teachers are working hard to pack up the belongings to have them ready. All items will be placed in the school’s cafeteria. Beginning at 10:00, per the schedule below, parents may enter the school’s parking from Talley Street. Parents will follow the traffic pattern and will be directed by the school’s faculty and staff. Parents need to have their child’s name written on a piece of paper large enough to be seen from the car windshield. Parents will remain in their cars. Members of Talley’s faculty and staff will bring the items to the car and place in the trunk or backseat. The staff will be wearing masks and gloves for safety precautions.
If you are leaving the school district and need to return your Chromebook, a faculty and staff member will also retrieve the Chromebook during the same timeframe. If you are returning to CSD for the 2020-2021 school year and do not want to be responsible for the Chromebook over the summer, you may also return the Chromebook. For those parents wishing to keep the Chromebook longer, they may do so. A later dropoff date will be scheduled. See schedule below.

If you are a parent of a student with a disability and you have not completed the following survey, please do so as soon as you can. May 31st is the deadline.
Dear CSD parents/guardians of students with disabilities under IDEA,
The IDEA Parent Survey will be open from January 15, 2020 – May 31, 2020. The IDEA Parent Survey helps the state to determine parents’ perception of the success of parent engagement between the local school and themselves. The information is gathered as a component of the State Performance Plan, Indicator 8: Percent of parents with a student receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving results for children with disabilities. The data collected is reported in the Annual Performance Report and on the system profile about each system. Each state is required to conduct a parent survey collection process to measure parent/family needs and perceptions.
Georgia’s parent survey is available to all families of students with disabilities. The survey will be administered through an online link and can be found on the websites listed below.

School News
Dear Parents of Rising 6th Graders
I hope you and your families are well. While 5th graders are wrapping up distance learning at FAVE and Talley, we are planning for their arrival at Renfroe Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year. I can’t wait, and I hope parents and students alike are looking forward to school next year. The jump from 5th grade to 6th grade is more of a hop really, and our 6th grade team is amazing at making the transition seamless. Our current reality will make this transition different, but it will be fine. I think we have all learned to be more flexible and resilient during this time. 2020-21 will be a great school year!!
Please see the information below concerning your child’s 6th grade experience next year at Renfroe Middle School. We need your input so we can complete schedules for next year.
Thank you.
Greg Wiseman
Principal, Renfroe Middle School
Rising 6th Grade Parent and Student Information
As you know, we have been unable to offer both our rising 6th grade parent night program and 5th grade student tours at Renfroe Middle School due to the school shutdown. Please be advised that we are currently working to redesign both events in an effort to answer your questions, ease any worries about your child's transition to middle school, and welcome our 5th graders with open Bulldog arms to RMS as soon as we are able! Please be on the lookout for information for rising middle schoolers prior to the end of the school year. We look forward to sharing more with you soon. -Ragan Hudson, 6th Grade Counselor, RMS
Choosing your Child’s World Language Class for 6th Grade
Please complete this form to choose which World Language class your child will have; Spanish, or French. At Renfroe Middle School, World Language is a core subject (along with Math, Science, ELA, and Individuals & Societies). Students have homeroom, the five core subjects, lunch, and two connections classes every day.
Connections Classes at RMS
RMS master-scheduler, Assistant Principal, Sarah Talton-Buck is working hard building the schedule for the 2020-21 school year. For her to complete her job, we need rising 6th grader input (parents are invited to help too) concerning Connections. Students choosing to participate in Chorus, Band and the newly developed Orchestra will need to indicate their intent (by registering on the websites for each program below).
If your child does not wish to participate in Band, Chorus, or Orchestra, there is nothing more for you to do. Students not wishing to participate in these classes will have their connections classes assigned to them.
If your child is interested in participating in one of these programs, check out the links below and request either Band, Chorus, or Orchestra directly from these websites.

Order Your Talley Street School Supplies for the 2020-21 School Year!
We know it’s hard to plan a few days in advance these days, much less think about the next school year, but we are hoping to take one thing off of your to-do list this summer with online school supply kits!
The PTO has partnered with 1st Day School Supplies to make it easy for families to order supplies for the upcoming school year at Talley Street. You can order supplies NOW through June 15. Go to http://1stdayschoolsupplies.com/kits.php?sid=1178528, and remember to choose your child's grade for the 2020-21 school year. Kits will be shipped directly to school at the end of July.
This service is optional for parents, and you do not have to order through the site - but the prices are very competitive and your school supply purchase will be done! Please note that there is an option to purchase additional kits to donate to the school if you would like to do so. Each child will have access to all necessary supplies in the classroom.
If you prefer to purchase school supplies on your own, supply lists are available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ASnrPtlvKy5X6D9E3j_ZmmOnTEYK_sa4iXqwzeH3L0M/edit?usp=sharing.

News from the Decatur Education Foundation
While this is not the end of the school year anyone was expecting, we wish everyone a safe, healthy, and relaxing summer. You can still contribute to our Step Up for Teachers campaign to give a shout out to your favorite teacher; to Honor the Helpers to thank the essential workers in our community; or to Lighten the Load to help those Decatur families dealing with food insecurity. Check out our midyear Impact Report to look back on what we accomplished before the school closings. This summer, we will be working closely with CSD, DHS and DHA to focus on equity and behavioral health issues for the coming school year.
