Multiplying Multi-Digit Whole Numbers

Steps:

  1. Estimate the product by rounding the factors to the nearest 10.
  2. Multiply the ones in the bottom number times the ones in the top number.
  3. If the answer is two digits, put down the ones digit under the ones place and carry the tens digit above the tens place in the top number.
  4. Multiply the ones in the bottom number times the tens in the top number.
  5. Add the number you carried and write down the whole number under the tens place.
  6. Cross out the numbers your carried.
  7. Put a place holder zero under the ones place in your first partial product.
  8. Now multiply the tens in the bottom number by the ones in the top number.
  9. If the answer is two digits, put down the ones digit under the tens place and carry the tens digit above the tens place in the top number.
  10. Multiply the tens in the bottom number by the tens in the top number.
  11. Add the number you carried and write the whole number next to the number under the tens place.
  12. Add your partial products.
  13. Compare your product to your estimate.
