Multiplying Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Steps:
- Estimate the product by rounding the factors to the nearest 10.
- Multiply the ones in the bottom number times the ones in the top number.
- If the answer is two digits, put down the ones digit under the ones place and carry the tens digit above the tens place in the top number.
- Multiply the ones in the bottom number times the tens in the top number.
- Add the number you carried and write down the whole number under the tens place.
- Cross out the numbers your carried.
- Put a place holder zero under the ones place in your first partial product.
- Now multiply the tens in the bottom number by the ones in the top number.
- If the answer is two digits, put down the ones digit under the tens place and carry the tens digit above the tens place in the top number.
- Multiply the tens in the bottom number by the tens in the top number.
- Add the number you carried and write the whole number next to the number under the tens place.
- Add your partial products.
- Compare your product to your estimate.
