Mental Health Training for EL Staff on January 2, 2019
Activty Photos: The BRAIN Architecture Game
The English Landing teachers returned to school on Wednesday and participated in a staff development training. Mrs. Gwen O'Brien, Director of Advocacy and Prevention for Synergy Services (EL Parent too), faciliated the first portion of our training. The staff watched the movie, Resilence: The Biology of Stress and The Science of Hope. This documentary explores what researchers have discovered is a dangerous health correlation between siginificant health conditions adults face and the link to childhood abuse and neglect. The higher the ACE score (Adverse Childhood Experiences), the more likely a child will face these significant health conditions as an adult. As educators we know an ACE score isn't a crystal ball becuase it doesn't account for the positive experiences and protective factors that build resilience and protect children from the affects of trauma.
Following this presentation and discussion, Mrs. Fullerton, Mrs. Seely, and Mrs. Davis, English Landing counselors/school social workers, continued the conversation with additional training on mental health topics including: ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences); Self Care; Trauma Senstitive Teaching; and Suicide Prevention.

Have you signed up for a Career Share Visit?
Mr. Wade Thomas visited Mrs. Sanford's fourth grade classroom for a Career Share Visit just before Winter Break. His son, Jack, is a student in this classroom. The fourth grade students assisted Mr. Thomas counting how many alarms were in a building by highlighting blue prints.

Celebrating Birthdays at English Landing!
Celebrating Student Birthdays: (Park Hill Parent/Student Handbook pages 37-38):
We are happy to celebrate student birthdays and half birthdays (if your child has a summer birthday) at English Landing! To protect the health and safety of our students, families may bring pre-packaged treats to school to share with classmates. In order to address any known allergy concerns, a label listing ingredients should be affixed to the package. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-packaged treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased.
At English Landing we need your HELP! Many birthday treats arrive at the beginning of the school day which provides us time to review the class list regarding food allergies or food intolerances, however, many other birthday treats arrive during lunch and often right at the same time the treat needs to be distributed to students. PLEASE plan on arriving earlier for lunch (at least 15 minutes) to give us time to check the pre-packaged treat ingredients with the students in the classroom who have food allergies or food intolerances. Our school nurse, Mrs. Kimbrel, and office staff, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Wood, or Mrs. Scott, will help with this process so when the lunchroom staff teachers distribute the treat in the cafeteria, additional steps have been taken to ensure we are protecting the health and safety of our eagles.
