SCIENCE OLYMPIAD THIS SAT FEB 2 @ EMERSON
Science Olympiad will take place on Saturday, February 2 from 9:00 - 11:00 am at Emerson Middle School. If you have withdrawn from the event, there is no need to read further.
If you are not familiar with Emerson School, please note that there is a large parking lot facing the main entrance of the school and a smaller lot directly to the east of the school. There is also campus parking available at Jefferson School.
Please use the main entrance to enter the building. Once inside, you will be directed to your event location. If you are judging an event, please go directly to your event location to find your event coordinator.
There is still time for one final opportunity to practice your events at home. Please think of this practice as a final rehearsal for the real event. As much as possible, teams should try to simulate the actual event--that is, working with a plan in mind and without the immediate help of their coach. If you would like a final refresher on your specific event, you may view the videos or read the specific guidelines for your event.
We expect all events to end by 11:00 a.m. Please make sure you do not leave without obtaining your child's Science Olympiad certificate and souvenir pencil. Medals for first, second, and third place finishers will also be distributed at each event area at the conclusion of each event.
Knowing that only some students will leave on Saturday with medals, I hope to emphasize with students the importance of taking away positive lessons from the Science Olympiad. Those lessons have to do more with the learning gained from the science and engineering challenges, and the effort put into solving those challenges, than with the final standings themselves.
My hope is that this event will be a fun and rewarding experience for all and will continue to be so for years to come.
Sincerely,
Dina Pappas
Science Olympiad Chair
CogAT testing for 2nd graders Feb. 4 - 8
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The CogAT, Cognitive Abilities Test, will be administered to all 2nd graders during the week of February 4-8. The CogAT estimates students’ reasoning and problem solving abilities and is the first step in determining students’ eligibility for the Channels of Challenge Program.
Our students take the verbal and quantitative tests on the CogAT. These tests are untimed but each test takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Test sessions will be scheduled on two different days.
To help your child do his or her best on this assessment:
Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.
Provide your child with words of encouragement. While we don’t want our students to feel anxious about any assessment, we do want them to do their best.
Please send earbuds/headphones to school by Wednesday, January 30 in a ziploc bag marked with your child’s name. These items will be kept at school and returned at the end of testing.
Feb. 5th and Feb. 6th - Vukmarkaj and Betti classes are testing
Feb. 7th and Feb. 8th - Schuetz and Weller classes are testing
