There are a number of ways you can get involved with LGBT Month @Ruskin. Please see below for information

LGBT Talks

This year, to celebrate LGBT History Month, Ruskin College is holding an open event in the Performance Space.

We have an array of star speakers (see below for biographies) and refreshments will be provided.

Phyll Opoku-Gyimah - Co-Founder and Executive Director of UK Black Pride

As the co-founder and Executive Director of UK Black Pride, it is safe to say that she is one of the leading lights behind the amazing celebration of Black LGBT communities. She has been named in the Independent Rainbow List as one of the top 100 most influential LGBT people.

She have worked tirelessly to bring together LGBT activists, artists, volunteers and supporters from within the LGBT community and beyond to support UK Black Pride and other such events.

She was nominated as Woman of the Year at the Black LGBT Community Awards 2007.

A Civil Servant by profession, she took a job in the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Trade Union where she started off trailblazing as the only Black female lead negotiator within Law and Justice bargaining area, then was promoted to Head of Equality, Health & Safety. Thereon to be the Head of Campaigns and Parliamentary Affairs.

In 2014, Phyll previously served one year on the Pride London Community Advisory Board (CAB) and currently sits on the TUC LGBT Committee, TUC Race Relations Committee, board member of Justice for Gay Africans which focuses on Human Rights, Equal Rights, challenging racism and discrimination. Newly appointed Trustee for Stonewall.

The Reverend Canon Steven Saxby

Steven Saxby is a parish priest in Walthamstow and works on social action across London and the UK. He has served on General Synod, is a member of the Faiths Forum for London, Chair of the Faith Workers Branch of Unite the Union, and a canon of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. Steven is married to Christine and has five children. He is on the Steering Group of the newly formed LGBTI Mission. His engagement comes from his passion to see the Church reflect God’s love for all.

Sionice Ross

Sionice is a Bank Manager from the north of England who moved to Oxford 8 years ago to pursue her career in banking.

She is an enthusiastic public speaker who focuses on raising awareness of transgender dysphoria and gender variance, holding audiences at local schools community groups, financial industry network meetings and head office transgender focus events.

Sionice is a proud stepmother of 3 year old Reuben and is currently planning her wedding to her fiancé Ben, which takes place in June 2017.
