Summer Break is Near!
We are oh so close to the finish line! Don't give up! The long summer days will be here before you know it. In anticipation of the summer, we encourage you to visit the University of Texas Division of Student Affairs site on prioritizing self-care.
In keeping with our blossoming May theme, the seeds of AVID have sprouted into beautiful bouquets of celebration:
Our students have improved on social-emotional awareness thanks to our PISD SEL Specialist. The topics ranged from going on digital detox/diets, healthy friendships, and making good decisions. The results of our community building made lasting friendships and supplied our students with strategies to preserve in adolescence.
The CHS AVID Site Team celebrates another year of certification. We hope to continue our pathway to success and to help our students achieve their dreams. We cannot say thank you enough to the staff volunteers who make CHS AVID the best in the district. If you are interested in joining the site team for next year, please reach out to Ashley Hendrickson.
The AVID 9th-grade group sent a college swag care package to a 5th grade class in California. Here is a message from the 5th graders' teacher:
"The AVID Pennant was a treat! Thank you so much!!! The card from your students was inspiring. My 5th graders were stunned someone cared enough to send us swag & a card. Your generosity made a lasting impression on my students. Blessings to you all!"
What a great way to end the year! CHS AVID is spreading cheer across state lines.
Please continue reading down the newsletter as we have important information pertaining to each AVID grade level and the close of the school year.
Closing out the End of the Year!
Technology Return Information
Here is some more information to help you plan when and how you will return your items back to Clark High School. This is also posted on our website; https://www.pisd.edu/clark
If your student is not returning next year, please see the link on our home page titled: Intent to Withdraw form
We will start allowing voluntary turn-ins. We will have the following criteria in place:
- A F2F student’s chrome book may be turned into their 6th period teacher.
- The student has good internet access from home and a device at home to use
- The student will have to show you their grades and will need to be passing all classes
- If passing all classes, you may turn in 5/20-5/26
- If not passing, you will need to turn in during one of the Family collection times
- A F2F student’s Textbooks/Novels should be turned into their appropriate teacher.
- REMOTE students will be more of the same, but we will handle it at the front office.
- There will a sign-up genius for you to use to schedule a walk up time or to schedule family drop off time
- There will be a QR code you will scan and submit a google form identifying what you are dropping off.
- All learning environment students will be able to return on Family Drop off days/times.
- Location and process will be coming soon.
- Sign Up Genius for times will be coming soon, hopefully 5/18 or 5/19 and will start with dates 5/20 through 5/28.
- Students taking AP exams will be given technology “passes” but that is also explained as well.
Returning to School
This is not to rehash the announcement from the district about the school returning to full capacity in August but, to make the community aware that the district is in the development phase of a "Social Reconnection" plan. Many of our Clark HS students have voiced concerns about returning to normal. The top issues being anxiety and returning to changed (or lost) friendships. Preparing for the Return is an article by the Washington Post that gives insight on this very topic.
Success with SEL Community
Tievoli (Nikki) Carson (no photo available).
Nikki joined AVID this semester, and has time and time again proven that we made the right decision to accept her into our program! Nikki never hesitates to communicate with me when she needs help or when she's confused, and when she gets behind on her work she diligently works to catch up and keep her grades high! She is constantly working on self-improvement - something we emphasize in AVID. So glad you joined AVID this year, Nikki!!
Congrats!
Zaria Brannon
Zaria is such a joy - she stops by the AVID room daily to chat, or help me with random things around the AVID room. She's always on top of her grades and is a good friend to all those around her. She's motivated to stay do well in all of her classes, and just brings joy with her wherever she goes. I've loved getting to know her this year!

Mrs. Hendrickson's Message for 9th graders
To my amazing 9th graders - thank you so much for an amazing (if unusual) year. Thank you for putting up with my epic projects, for laughing at my dumb jokes, for trusting me with your thoughts, and for coming to visit with me in the mornings, during study halls and lunches, during every passing period, and before taking your STAAR exams. You’ve truly made this year the best of my career, and I cannot wait to be your 10th grade AVID teacher next year. This summer please rest, rejuvenate, and take care of yourselves both physically and emotionally. Next year, I promise you, will be EPIC! Love, Mrs. H
Please keep us in the loop this summer. Post your summer photos and happenings in flipgrid.
