Words From Our Principal

Dear Parents and Students,

In a few days we will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day. This is a great opportunity to reflect on all the wonderful things we have and to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. They have all been working very hard this semester in and out of school with academics, sports, and other activities. I also want to acknowledge our great staff for making a difference in our students’ lives on a daily basis. I wish all of you and your families a great Thanksgiving and a well-deserved break.

Eduardo Reyes, Ed.D.

Halloween Spirit at BVM

Staff and students couldn't help but get in the Halloween spirit. Our Special Education Department even held a Halloween Party during lunch for all of their students in the cafeteria with spooky decorations.

Dia de los Muertos Festival

The Dia de los Muertos took place on Friday Oct. 28th, here at Bonita Vista Middle School. The purpose of the festival was to have a fun filled night with our community. Students from the dual language immersion program explained the history behind Dia de los Muertos and the significance of the Ofrendas (altars). Many students entered our Ofrenda competition and costume competition. The winners went home with gift cards and pumpkin pie. Thank you to the BVM Band and Mariachi for performing, the support of the Dual Language Immersion, AVID and Robotics students and teachers, and for our amazing dual language immersion parents. The festival was a great success!

AJ's Kids Crane

The Tri-M Music Honor Society sponsored a toy drive for Rady Children's Hospital in cooperation with the Energy 103.7 AJ's Kids Crane. Thank you to everyone who donated!

Student Work Highlight

Our teachers are continuously challenging our students to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom in creative and innovative ways. The example below is just one piece of evidence of how one of our eighth grade students, Ursula Neuner, was challenged by her science teacher, Mr. Kumabe, to apply her newly acquired knowledge of moon phases in a poem format. She worked on this poem over a three week period and the result is astounding! Keep up the great work Ursula!

Alhambra Tiles

Students use shape, symmetry, repetition, and unity to create initial designs reminiscent of the Alhambra and Islamic Spain.

Staff of the Month

We would like to congratulate our special education teacher, Rich Giffen, as our Staff Member of the Month! Rich would much rather prefer to remain behind the scenes and stay out of the spotlight. However, he is a true example of the Bonita Way. He is always willing to lend a helping hand and support a student or colleague when needed. Just this month we were informed of a student who had been found unconscious. Rich just happen to be walking by and within seconds had already lifted the student and was carrying him over to the nurse's office for evaluation as the administrators were arriving to the location. Thank you Rich for all that you do for our school!

Health Corner

November Greetings

I would like to wish all of the families of Bonita Vista Middle School a very Happy Thanksgiving. This is a wonderful time to relax and spend with family and friends before the busy December holidays begin.

November is also Diabetes awareness month. Talk to your health care provider about the risk factors within your family history, take precautions, and help support those persons you know with Diabetes.

Enjoy your break,

Christi Stoddard, RN, BSN, PHN

Counselors Corner

We are coming to a close for Fall Semester and it’s hard to believe how fast the semester has passed! Many students have buckled down and understand the importance of completing their homework assignments as we get closer to winter break. We have only a couple of weeks before the end of the semester and only a few days of AEC after the break to be sure that students have all their assignments completed. Many of the 7th graders have come into the counseling center with multiple missing assignments, and stated that they have attended AEC every day and yet they still have missing assignments. Understand that AEC, Saturday Scholars, AEC Lunch, and Reteaching are all interventions to help students gain the skills necessary to show mastery in their assessments. Some students attend the interventions, but do not complete the work. Some students do NOT ask questions or seek out help when needed. There are teachers there to help students with any assignment. There are many students in the classroom and you will have to learn how to communicate with your teachers because this will help you prepare for high school. Let’s start working hard the next 2 weeks so that you can enjoy the winter break and come back refreshed for the new year. Good luck and come see us if you need anything!
