1st Nine Weeks Overview
Nonfiction/Comprehension Toolkit
The first grading cycle focuses solely on nonfiction. Using the comprehension toolkit , students will learn the appropriate strategies for reading and understanding nonfiction texts. We will read several interesting and relevant selections as we explore how to make connections, analyze, and generate questions from texts. At the completion of the unit, students will have a better understanding of how to tackle nonfiction passages.
Targeted nonfiction skills:
- Text structures
- Text features
- Vocabulary and context clues
- Main idea/details
- Summarizing and paraphrasing
- Drawing conclusions
- Generating written responses to questions
Grammar
The first grading cycle we are breaking down the parts of a sentence, learning what they are and how to apply them in order to understand what a complete sentence really is and how to determine whether it is complete or incomplete.
Targeted Skills:
- common, proper and plural nouns
- verbs and irregular verbs
- verb tense (past, present, future)
- subject and predicates
- adjectives
- adverbs
- conjunctions
- prepositions

AR - Reading Goals
Per the Language Arts policy, students are required to read at least 20 minutes per night. I try my best to give all students time to read at school, but they may still need to read at home in order to reach their goals. Failure to read or take AR tests could result in lower class averages. Please encourage your child to read and take AR tests as needed.
AR Incentive
In an effort to increase reading stamina and help motivate our students to read, the Language Arts department has implemented a reading incentive for the 2017-2018 school year. Students will have the opportunity to attend an extra field trip if they meet their AR goal requirements this year. In order to be eligible for the field trip, students must meet their AR goal the remaining 3 grading cycles. This is a challenging but attainable goal for all students. Please go over this incentive with your child, and encourage them to meet their goals every grading cycle. Our hope is that all students will be in attendance in May!
