Please secure your child care or enrichment programs based on the assignment of where you live. For example, if you live in a morning neighborhood, please secure an afternoon program for your child.

COUNSELOR CORNER
"What to Do When Your Child is Unhappy at School"
As parents, we want our children to be happy and healthy.....and that includes being happy going to school! Writer Nancy Jergins, from imom.com, said that parents need to consider five areas when a child shares that they don't like school.
1. Physical problems: If a student complains of ailments, consult with a doctor to rule out any medical concerns that could be causing pain, fatigue or discomfort during the school day. Certain medical conditions such as allergies or diabetes may contribute to a miserable day at school, or anywhere!
2. Teacher: Check in with the teacher to gauge his or her perspective. Often the teacher may not be aware of the student's unhappiness or can provide some input and can work with the student to improve the environment.
3. Friends: Find out who your child's friends are in school. If you think friendships are lacking, help your child develop peer relations by inviting classmates over after school or get kids together on the weekends.
4. Academic: If a child is struggling academically, often he or she will want to "avoid" the cause of the discomfort. Set up a conference with the teacher to see how your student is progressing and what support you can offer at home. Check in with your child during homework time, to provide assistance or encouragement when needed.
5.Bullies:Talk to your child about bullying. Ask if he or she has ever been bullied or mistreated someone else. Talk about ways to deal with this situation and how to get help if needed.
6. Contact the School's Counselor: Let Mrs. Chick or Mrs. Wight know so an appointment can be made to address the concerns!

GIFTED CORNER
Parents of first graders who are interested in having their child considered for gifted identification may initiate an application. Applications are due March 1st. An Open House will be held at Old Donation Center (2509 Seaboard Road) on Thursday, February 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
Please go on line to https://giftedapplication.vbcps.com to complete the Parent Information Form/application for gifted identification, Old Donation School, gifted art, and/or gifted dance.
To log in, you will use your student’s permanent number. Most students have memorized this number as it is used as their library number, their lunch number and for logging in to school computers.
The password for the referral is the same password your child uses as school to log in to the computers. The password will change quarterly. Our school has a formula for the password but some classrooms have created their own. You will have to ask your child about his/her password. The formula for the school is:
(The number for the quarter we are in, 1-4)jbdes(capitalized first initial) (capitalized last initial) so mine might look something like this: 1jbdesKR during the first quarter.
If you want to be considered for Old Donation School, you must also select that on the application at this time.
The Gifted Art and Dance program is a one day a week pull out program. You can read more about it on line:

Fifth grade applications for gifted identification, Old Donation School, and Plaza’s Middle Years Program are due Feb. 1st. Use the same log in information in the first grade paragraph above for gifted identification and/or Old Donation School. CLINIC CORNER
5th Graders!!! Are you ready for Middle School???
Parents, it’s not too early to think about Middle school.
This is an early reminder for all 5th graders that the Tdap immunization is required to enter 6th grade. Call your Primary Care provider and schedule an appointment to get this done.
Proof of the immunization can be dropped off by your child to the clinic anytime up until June 15, 2017. If you get it done after the last day of school or into the summer, please take it to your Middle School as soon as you get it; don’t delay.
Your child will not get a class schedule mailed to them in the summer without proof that they had this immunization. They will not be able to start school without this immunization.
Don’t Delay! Plan ahead and schedule the appointment. Bring proof to the school nurse before the last day of school and I will put the immunization information into your child’s health record for middle school. A good time to get this done is during school breaks.
