Ralph Fletcher
This week our students in grades 4-5 were visited by Ralph Fletcher, author of Marshfield Dreams, Hello Harvest Moon and Twilight Comes Twice, amongst others. He is not only an author of children’s books but also numerous professional books for teachers. He truly is one of the most respected professionals in the field of children’s literature and the teaching of writing.
After Ralph met with all the students he met with teachers in grades 3-5 and worked with them on the teaching of writing. Ralph’s visit left our teachers and our students inspired. We know he left an impression on some because we have heard from a number of parents who wanted to let us know how much their child appreciated their time with him.
Writing is such an important skill. With the rise in technology the need to be able to successfully write is more important than ever as the demands to communicate through writing have only increased. Did you know that research actually says that those with writing skills tend to be more successful in life? When you look at the use of devices, for example, there are consumers, or those who read and watch all the content available, and there are producers, or those who write the stories and develop the content. Our job here is to ensure that kids see themselves as writers and capable of becoming producers because research has shown that those with the skills to become producers tend to be more successful in life!
Thank you to our PTA for supporting Ralph’s visit! If you have a child in grades 4-5 please ask them about his visit and his books. If you are interested in learning more about Ralph Fletcher visit his website at RalphFletcher.com.
