Putting a Mission into Motion
What is required to get our students to think independently?
Thinking independently requires us to work at the edge of our understanding. Working at the edge is a metaphor for pushing our limits. If we want students to think independently, we must push them to the edge of their understandings. This process is not just simply building a knowledge base, while that is important, we must also require them to think at higher levels. In connection with our learning in PD, the edge will come as students make meaning and transfer knowledge to new and relevant tasks. The edge will be different for all students. We can sometimes fall into the tyranny of comparison. Some students (and adults) will not try difficult things because they live in comparison to their peers. Which can cause them to believe they do not have the ability to accomplish difficult tasks. We have to help our students work to their edge regularly, encourage them to stop comparing themselves to others, and support them relentlessly in that process.
More to come next week -- keep working to put our mission into motion! #FlyAsOne
