From the Principal’s Desk: Family Connection
As daylight is becoming shorter and the time spent inside is becoming longer, there is an opportunity to gain connection with your child. Coming out of distance learning and experiencing fewer interactions outside of the immediate family has made the re-entry back into school and other social settings a bit challenging. Fight the urge to retreat to separate corners of the house with your phone or video games, instead let’s challenge ourselves to spend more time in conversations which create human connection and re-engage us in building positive relationships.

Family Literacy
If you have any questions about this or other literacy activities, please call or send me an email! ~ Jennifer Scypinski, Literacy Specialist/Title 1 Coordinator 503-431-4896 Sounds & Letters Scavenger Hunt Family Literacy Activity that can be done anywhere! Who This literacy activity is for children who are just learning their letter names and sounds as well as fluent readers. Where The scavenger hunt can be done while at the grocery store, the mall, during car rides - anywhere! Materials Notebook or Paper and clipboard Pencil, pen, crayon, or marker Optional: Paper treasure box (link here) How-to For children learning letter sounds Before going on your trip to the grocery store, or other errands, have your child pick a focus letter sound or two for the hunt. Practice the sound together. For example, if your child chooses the sound /d/, remind them that their friend David’s name starts with /d/ and so does the word “dig.” Ask what other things start with that sound. Think of some things that you might see during the errand that might start with that sound. While in the store, model the sound. For example, if you see doughnuts, “Our scavenger hunt today is for words that start with /d/. I see doughnuts! Doughnut starts with /d/. The letter d makes the /d/ sound.” As your child finds items with the chosen beginning sound, have them draw a small picture on their paper or in their notebook. For children who are reading Follow the same procedure as above, but choose specific words. Optional Follow-up After returning home, your child may cut out the pictures they drew and glue or tape them to the treasure box. Try to fill one box for each of the various beginning sounds: beginning consonants, beginning short vowels, or beginning blends Fill treasure boxes to eventually make a recipe, like peanut butter sandwiches, or chocolate chip cookies.
Incoming Traffic
As the school year continues, we ask parents to take precautions when dropping off their students. We have had a few close calls as people have tried to drive to the back parking lot by the Resource Center. With the Caring Closet moving in later this week, traffic will only increase. We appreciate all our families keeping each other safe.
