A reflection of December 2018 at MSE

From the Desk of A. Pruitt

Welcome back!

I hope that each of you had a wonderful break and enjoyed special time with friends and family. Myself and the staff at MSE know time away from our everyday tasks can be remarkably restorative. I am confident that, as always, our scholars will return to work with renewed enthusiasm and vigor.

We are now gearing up for Saturday School to get students prepared for our standardized tests in April, which is coming up soon! Please be on the look out for the tutoring information.

LOOKING FOR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS!

I need parents and community members to be part of MSE PTO. Please sign up by January 18, 2019, the link is located on the MSE website. Follow the instructions below to join! We aspire to have our first meeting at the end of January to kick off 2019 with strong parent and community involvement. I am looking forward to working with you!

MSE Annual Spelling Bee

On 12/18, MSE hosted its annual spelling bee. 20 students in grades 4-8 participated. Amy P. in 7th grade was our champion, and Esmeralda D. in 7th grade was our runner-up. After break, Amy will have the opportunity to take a written spelling test, and, if she does well, can advance to the regional spelling bee at the University of Memphis. Thanks to all students who studied hard to do their best! We look forward to next year's spelling bee.

Success in our December Parent Academy

MSE sponsored a parental academy in order to increase parent involvement at MSE and to provide parents opportunities to improve their skills. MSE offered a computer class and an ESL class.
The parent ESL class was designed for non-native speakers of English who are at a beginning or intermediate level. In this class, they covered the four areas of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We had successful classes in the fall and are looking to create more in the future.

Maxine STEAM Academy Visit

MSE admin toured Maxine STEAM Academy on 11/27 to see their STEAM program in action. Administrators got a chance to take a tour of the school led by one of their 8th graders and visit classrooms to see students working hard on STEM projects. It was a great opportunity for them to talk to Maxine STEAM administrators and learn more about their STEAM program. We look forward to implementing more STEM focused ideas at MSE in the upcoming years.

Unit Starter Mini Grant

MSE was the only school in Shelby County to be awarded a Unit Starter Mini Grant. The grant comes from the Read to Be Ready Program and provides our Kindergarten teachers with new curriculum for a unit about change and includes brand new texts to use to help students engage in the content! We are so excited to get our youngest students set up for success as they continue to grow at MSE.

High School Counselor's Corner

Wow, we have completed the first semester!

This has already been an incredible school year. I am so excited to continue my work with such great students in the new year. Our students have excelled academically from increasing the senior class ACT average to 173 students making honor roll for the first semester. I am anxiously anticipating next semester as I am sure our students will continue to make us proud.
