Insects!

We have started our final science unit on Insects. Each student has two mealworms in a vial. As scientists, they have been making observations and documenting their findings. We'll talk about what living things need (air, space, water, food) and about the life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, adult). When it is warmer, we'll get butterflies larvae! The journals will not be sent home this year, but will be passed along to second grade. This all leads up to our field trip to Richardson Nature Center in May. The students were REALLY excited about the mealworms. More photos are at the end of this newsletter.

Classroom Baskets

We are collecting items for our Annual Classroom Baskets. These will be raffled off at the Hillcrest Carnival on Saturday, April 23, in the cafeteria. Baskets, bins and ribbon donations are also appreciated. Please send any items/donations to class by April 15 so that there is time to assemble the baskets.

Shop Online-Do you have an AmazonSmile account? If not, you may sign up and list "PTA Minnesota Congress 029817 Hillcrest Community School" as your charitable organization. Each time you order on Amazon, our PTSA may receive a donation!

Cash Donation-If you would prefer to skip the shopping and send money, I'll collect money and purchase a gift card and/or Lego set(s) from The Lego Store at the MOA. Please send cash (or check payable to me) with a note that you'd like to donate it to our basket.

Carnival Carnival - April 23

If you haven't been to the carnival before, it is an indoor event with activities and games for the entire family and the event is A LOT of fun! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The classroom Baskets will be in the cafeteria and raffle tickets will cost $1. There will be a silent auction in the library. You don't want to miss this! Here are some items that I have seen auctioned off in the past: gift cards to restaurants and coffee shops, coffee/adult beverages, bowling parties, landscaping services, theater tickets, pieces of art, tickets to sporting events, signed memorabilia, massages, hair/beauty products, party packages, music/instrument/sport related lessons, etc. Please contact Thea Sheffert if you are able to donate a service or item to the silent auction.

Harvested Words

Last week we harvested words from the following songs:

"You've Got A Friend In Me" (Toy Story)

"Humble and Kind" by Tim McGraw <modified version>

"Imagine" by John Lennon <modified version>

"Royal Drum" (Mondo curriculum)

"Mice" (Mondo curriculum)

Sharing

Each day (Tue-Fri) a student will be assigned to share something with the class. They may bring in any item (be sure it is not breakable or expensive) or they may share about something that has happened to them, like a vacation or a night with grandparents. If they forget their item, they will share a book from their book bag. This is meant to be a low stress and fun activity to help build classroom community. Ideas: stuffed animal, game, medal, artwork, etc. If a student is absent on their sharing day, there will be a make up day at the end of the month.

Placement Information

Student placement consideration requests for the 2016-17 school year can be made between March 28th and April 29th by filling out a student placement consideration form. Starting March 28th placement consideration forms will be available in our school office. Completed forms must be received in person or by mail to our school office by April 29th. If you have questions, please contact Mr. K.
