School News You Can Use!

August 12, 2020
Good Afternoon Walden Families,

While it is not typical to receive a newsletter mid-week, I know how important communication is right now as we prepare for our first week of school. Please take a moment and read through some new information shared below regarding schedules, class placements, and our student/teacher meet and greet.

Thank you!

Teacher Meet and Greet - Family Sign-Up

Please be on the lookout for an email this Friday at 1pm from me. Families will have access to a Sign-Up Genius form to select times that work for your child to meet their teachers and pick up their devices/materials.

Walden 109 Online Schedules

In order to help for planning purposes, we are sharing example Walden schedules here to give families an idea of what a typical day will look like while your child is learning remotely. One of the most notable differences between remote learning this past Spring and the new Deerfield 109 Online program is an increase in synchronous learning time.

You will notice that our new schedule mirrors a typical school day with more real-time learning opportunities throughout the day. In addition, our teachers will be using many of the instructional strategies that they would use in the classroom such as small-group learning and one-on-one conferences. Please note that your child may be given an independent practice activity to do during these periods, even if the schedule indicates the class is on Zoom, while the teacher works with smaller groups of students.

Finally, to help our students build their stamina to participate in remote learning for longer periods of time, our teachers may be structuring break times that are not reflected on the schedule. Break times will help recharge and re-energize students so that they can maintain focus and engagement throughout their day. Thank you for your support and partnership as we prepare to kick off the 2020-21 school year!

Class Placement Information

Class placements will be available in Family Access on Friday, August 14th at 8:00 a.m. Developing class lists is a complex process. We have put a significant amount of time into creating balanced classes that meet student needs. The teacher listed represents the final class placement for your child. Changes to class placements will not be made. Our teachers are very excited about their new classes and have been working hard to prepare for the new school year.

We will roll out access to class placements steadily throughout the morning so we do not overload the system. Please do not contact the front office or the District Center if you don’t see the correct links to view class placements right away, or if friends have access but your account isn’t yet open to view class placements.

Click here for a link to Family Access. Upon logging into Family Access to check teacher assignments, please also acknowledge the student handbook for each of your school-aged children individually. This is an annual requirement.

If you need assistance with Family Access please contact Kelly Mitchell at kmitchell@dps109.org

Health Forms

Please make sure that you reach out to our school nurse, Ruth Bredemeier, with your health forms with immunizations. Also, for all kindergarten students and new students to Walden, we need additional dental and vision forms. Please be in touch with Mrs. Bredemeier at rbredemeier@dps109.org with questions!
