Historical Significance
The Monks of Mepkin Abbey have been living beside the Cooper River since 1949 caring for the land with its many layers of history. This land was originally inhabited by Native Americans (Cusabo), after 1681 was owned by various SC families. It also served as a working plantation. Eventually, the land was donated to the monastery, by Clare Booth Luce.Henry Laurens is buried at Mepkin Abbey, over by the Cooper River. Laurens served in the Continental Congress and has great historical significance to SC and our nation.http://www.constitutionfacts.com/us-articles-of-confederation/about-the-signers/
