Architecture in Ancient Greece - Columns
Welcome back from Spring Break! Today we began the day with an engineering challenge, each classmate needed to build the strongest column using only one sheet of paper and two index cards. Considering the limited supplies I was very surprised by the amount of creativity that was on display! We tested out our prototypes with weights and then briefly discussed what adjustments could be made to improve. We will retry this challenge next week and apply what we have discovered to our next column design. We took some time to learn about how and why the ancient Greeks used columns in their architecture and I showed them some popular U.S buildings that use either Doric, Ionic or Corinthian columns. We then wrote some architecture questions for our Greek game board projects and started working on our model Parthenon (for the game board as well).
