A Message from Mr. Hoog
Dear BSE families,
It has been wonderful to see our children back at BSE doing great work and building meaningful relationships with their teachers and fellow students! I would like to thank all of you who were able to attend our Ice Cream Social and Meet the Teacher events. Your engagement with your child’s education and building relationships with our staff is very important to us. I would also like to thank our entire BSE staff for another outstanding job with all of the preparation it took to begin this school year in such a positive way.
On August 13, 2019, our students and staff participated in our first required monthly fire drill of the 2019-2020 school year. Safety continues to be our top priority and part of our culture here at Brooks School Elementary. Both students and staff responded quickly and professionally as they followed the procedures in responding to a fire alarm. This includes an initial ‘Shelter in Place’ process (remaining in classrooms) while the safety team verifies the alarm. Our administrative team would like to thank you for your understanding and support as we train everyone at BSE on safety procedures.
Canvas is Hamilton Southeastern's Learning Management System. We highly encourage you to sign-up for a Canvas account if you have not already. A large amount of future correspondence and eLearning from teachers will be shared on the Canvas platform.

If you could use some technical assistance with getting started with a Canvas account, I highly encourage you to attend our first PTO meeting on Tuesday, August 20, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., in our Library. We will have a team of Canvas helpers available to help you get your parent account started and synced with any other children you may have in the district so that you can have all information in one location. We hope to see you there!
Thanks for all of your support with a great start to the new school year!
Mr. Hoog

- For children at least two and a half years of age, but not yet age-eligible for kindergarten, you should contact the Early Childhood Assessment Team at Brooks School Elementary School, (317) 915-4250.
- For students who are eligible for kindergarten through age 21, you should contact your child’s teacher, school counselor or building administrator to discuss your concerns and explore the steps to be taken. If your child is not enrolled in public school, you should contact the counselor or building administrator in the building your child would attend if enrolled.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.

SafeVisitor Reminder
Allergy Friendly School Environment
Here at Brooks School Elementary, we make the safety and well-being of every student our top priority. That’s why we’re going to continue our pilot to reduce students’ exposure to peanuts and tree nuts. We want all of our families to be aware, not just our allergy families.
During the 2019-20 school year, BSE is going to continue to be an allergy friendly building. In order to do this, we need your help. We ask that you consider alternatives to anything containing peanuts or other tree nuts, such as: almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, and pistachios. The cafeteria will continue serving meals that are peanut and tree nut free.
Please remember if your child has a severe food allergy, it is imperative that you notify the school nurse. Also, if they require an Epi-pen, emergency medication orders must be signed by the child’s physician each school year.
Becoming a peanut and nut-friendly building is a collaborative effort. Students will not be punished if they bring in food containing nuts, so we cannot guarantee that children with allergies will not have accidental exposure.
This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you understand how important is to respect and adhere to these guidelines.
