WELLNESS IN TOUGH TIMES
Wellness in Tough Times for Farm and Ranch Families webinar to be offered by Nebraska Extension
Farmers and ranchers have many stressors in their lives. Weather challenges and disasters like many Nebraskans have recently experienced have led to uncertainty in their crop and livestock operations. Machinery breakdowns, debt loads, volatile markets, sleep deprivation, changing regulations, and the stress of holding onto a multi-generational farm/ranch all play a part of the stress and mental health of a farmer or rancher. Farmers and ranchers know the importance of planning and talking about their financial health to bankers, financial planners, spouses, etc. but might not realize how important it is to spend time on their mental health.
A free webinar will be offered April 23 via the web for farm and ranch families. The webinar will take place at noon (CST) and can be accessed at go.unl.edu/farmstresswebinar. Wellness in Tough Times will be presented by Nebraska Extension Educators Glennis McClure and Brandy VanDeWalle starting at 12:00 p.m. (CST). This free webinar is available for farm and ranch families to participate and will provide strategies for dealing with the stress of farming or ranching in today’s difficult economic environment.
Participants will learn: How to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress; understand the role stress plays in our lives; and strategies and resources to manage stress.
For more information, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at brandy.vandewalle@unl.edu or (402)759-3712.
Dates and locations for a separate workshop available to agribusiness professionals and service providers working with farmers and ranchers will be released soon: Communicating with Farmers Under Stress. For more information on this workshop contact Susan Harris-Broomfield susan.harris@unl.edu

2019 SC 4-H Foundation Fundraiser
2019 Silent Auction “Keep Saunders County Rolling” will be the slogan for this year’s silent auction. o Cole will direct 4-H clubs (via email) to construct a project that somehow uses wheels of some sort or something that puts things into motion or that has been used to keep things in motion (ie: fiber optics, wagon wheels, tires, etc). The auction items will be on display and up for bidding during the fair.
o A “Buy Now” option price will be set upon the 4-H Club’s suggestion. Bidding will continue on items that haven’t been purchased through the “Buy Now” option and will be finalized through a Live Auction Sunday evening prior to the Livestock Auction
Nebraska Charter Year
February 15, 2019 marks 150 years since the day the state of Nebraska chartered the University of Nebraska. This means that on February 15, 1869, the University of Nebraska became a part of the fabric of our state. Nebraska Extension is perfectly positioned to take this celebrations state-wide. So you will see some new ACTIVITIES in 2019 to celebrate this. One of them will be the following photography class at the fair:
State Fair Photography Class
• 4-H members enrolled in Mastering Photography Unit 3 are invited to celebrate N|150 by exhibiting in the Theme Print (Class B182060) at their local counties fairs. The top exhibit(s) from each county will be selected to advance to the Nebraska State Fair. February 15, 2019 marks 150 years of history to appreciate, impact to unpack, and stories to tell. How has the University of Nebraska impacted you, your family, or your community? How can you tell this story through photography?
4H Shotgun Shooting
Female and Male Youth, grades 6 thru 12, interested in trapshooting are encouraged to contact Ashland Gun Club 4H. We are wanting to establish 5 person, Female and Male, Middle and Senior High School Teams for the 2018-2019 school year. No experience necessary! Hunter Safety Required!
8th Annual Innovative Youth Corn Challenge
Do you enjoy being outside? Learning new things about crops? Considering a career involving crops, insects, diseases, soils, water or more? Do you want to help figure out how to feed our world’s growing population in a sustainable way?
Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the 8th Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), guides participants through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production.
To participate in 2019, youth must complete and return an entry form by APRIL 1 (Exteneded deadline due to flooding) to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded after January 1st at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/activities. For more information, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at brandy.vandewalle@unl.edu.
