GALATAS ELEMENTARY WALK TO SCHOOL DAY-TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1
Please join us on Tuesday, October 1, for our annual Walk to School Day! Our goal is to have every Galatas student arrive by foot (or bike or scooter) on Tuesday. You will feel the Galatas school spirit as your student walks down the front sidewalk with fellow GREYHOUNDS!
For those of you who live too far from school, you can park at Cattail Park or in a nearby neighborhood and walk to Galatas. Please plan to arrive in time to be in class by the 8:00 bell. Come join the FUN as families participate in this fun community event and meet local mascots! There will be giveaways and a raffle drawing for all students who walk to school that day.
Help us “Chalk the Walk” the afternoon before (Monday, September 30)! We would LOVE your help on Monday night from after school until around 5:00 p.m. to help decorate the sidewalks leading up to Galatas. Anyone is welcome to come out and join in the fun!
We look forward to seeing everyone promoting healthy living, a fun community, and Galatas spirit!

● REMINDER: All students shopping before going to their classroom in the morning must have a parent or guardian with them. ***Please note that if you are shopping with your child before school, he/she must be in homeroom class before the bell rings at 8:00 am. Please plan your purchasing time accordingly. Thanks for your cooperation on this matter.*** Otherwise, students will be able to shop when teachers allow, as well as during recess and Library Specials.
- During the fair, the teachers will have wish lists filled out. These are books they would like to have for their classroom libraries. Please feel free to purchase something from their selections. Once you purchase the item(s), please ask the person helping you at the register for a bookplate sticker. This year, we will also have gift cards available for purchase to use in the book fair. You may also shop the online fair.
Sales tax is not included in the prices and is 8.25%.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at the fair!

Helping Your Child Complete Homework
with Consistent Routines at Home
(adapted from the article “Finish Your Homework!” By Chris Zeigler Dendy, M.S.)
- Make a plan for tracking homework assignments. For older students, encourage your child to write every assignment in his daily planner. For younger students, review your child’s teacher’s website. Get contact information for a student in each class who your child can rely on to know the assignments if something is missing. One high school student wrote his assignments on 3 x 5 cards, pre-printed with the names of his courses, that he stored in his pants pocket.
- Establish time for homework. Some children need a break after classes. Others work best while still in “school mode.” If after-school activities make a regular schedule impossible, post a weekly calendar that lists homework start and finish times.
- Ask the teacher about assignment routines. The math teacher may say, “I assign homework four nights a week, and give a test at the end of each chapter — roughly every two weeks.” This tells you that something is amiss if your child says he doesn’t have any math homework two nights in a row.
- Schedule a five-minute break for every 20 minutes of work. Short, frequent breaks help children recharge.
- Monitor your child’s progress with a daily or weekly report. Daily and weekly reports from a teacher warn parents when their child is in danger of failing and in need of more supervision at home. The reports help you and your child identify missing homework assignments, so you can find them and get them to the teacher. Younger children need more frequent feedback, so they may have a daily report. In some cases, weekly reports may be sufficient for students in upper grades.
- Talk with your child’s teacher. If you and your child are struggling with the above strategies throughout the school year, speak with your child’s teacher about alternatives to these methods. She may have other ideas that may help your child be more successful.
