Barriers to Learning
Universal Design for Learning
How might we design lessons and learning units from the beginning instead of retrofitting?
Supporting Rigor for All: UDL
"Start with the goal. What content do you want to teach?" -David Rose
Planning with UDL in mind allows teachers to remove potential barriers in the goals, materials, methods, and assessments that are part of a unit of study and individual lessons.
Goals
- Are there barriers in the ways the learning goals/objectives are stated?
- Are the goals aligned with the planned assessments?
Methods
- What is the learning context (location, grouping)?
- How is content presented? (oral, visual, written)
- Which instructional formats are used in the lesson (lecture, reading, demonstration)?
Materials
- Do the materials require students to have certain skills in order for him or her to make meaning from them?
- Are there flexible options or are all students using the same materials?
Assessments
- How are your assessments aligned to your lesson goals?
- Are options provided in order to accurately measure the student’s ability to demonstrate the construct or goal of the assessment?
