"Barriers" to a Culture Focused on Championing for Students

Below are the "barriers" sometimes provided as reasons they can't or won't take the time to get to know students. I think we know the power of the relationships we develop with students - for them and for us! Thank you for committing to be a Champion for Students!


"There isn't time."

It is imperative that we intentionally create opportunities to spend time with students. I believe that every adult at a school should strive to connect with students.

Looking for ways we can connect with students through our time together, to understand what matters to them and what "makes them tick." When we learn about our students by listening to them,


"It's not my job."

To the contrary, there is no element more critical for school success than for a staff to believe and behave in a manner that models a student-first mindset. Creating a common vision and agreeing upon values that honor every student is important to this. We must see that teachers deliver quality content in meaningful ways AND cultivate positive, personal relationships with students.


"Dealing with challenges isn't worth the potential negative response."

We must be willing to support one another during challenging times with students and parents. Taking time to walk through anticipated responses from each other ahead of time can help everyone. Success often comes down to each individual acting with courage and engaging in tough conversations.

We have to be willing to have heartfelt conversations with students and families, to talk about our concerns and plans of support for student success.


"When students behave poorly or fail to do the work, they don't deserve my time or attention."

We work with children who in most cases have not developed the ability to think beyond the short-term. They simply do not have the experience or level of maturity to understand the long-term consequences of their choices or actions. Its imperative that we don't make their behavior about us.

It is our responsibility as the adults to set the tone for experiences with students that they never leave with a student asking, "Why won't he or she just listen to me?'

Never underestimate the impact that purposeful and positive engagement with students can have. Never pass up an opportunity to smile and greet a student in a positive way.

The PBS lesson focus this week is "I can be okay even if others are not okay." I can ignore behaviors of others.

PBS Data at a Glance

Below are a few views of our data for January. We saw an overall drop in the number of minors during the month. The snapshots below show our PBS data by problem behavior, action taken and days of the week.


When looking at problem behaviors, we notice that defiance and disrespect were the most frequent issues. As a PBS team, we work to design lessons to address these areas with a focus to develop skills to improve student behaviors.


When looking at action taken, it is obvious that reteaching and loss of privilege are the actions most frequently taken. If we see behaviors continuing when action has been taken, what other actions are needed. When a student loses a privilege, what are we doing with that time? Are we taking time to practice and process with students so we are able to get to the root of the problem and practice the skill/proper way to respond?


When looking at days of the week, we see a drastic increase across the week until Thursday, then a sharp decline. What is causing this pattern? We were not in school many Friday's in January. Is the increase across the week a reflection of student behavior or adult tolerance level? Just something to think about.

**Lorie Rost will be in the building on Monday, February 25th for a consult with me from 8:30-11:30. As part of this, we will be coming around to various rooms to look at literacy instruction. I realize this will require a "flip" for some of you and appreciate your making the change for Monday the 25th only. If you have questions, let me know!
