Dear FTMHS Students,
On behalf of our teachers and staff at FTMHS, I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to our High School for the 2020-2021 school year. I hope that you and your families have had a safe and enjoyable summer and that you are looking forward to the amazing opportunities that lie ahead.
As we get ready for this new school year, please:
Be Safe – Remember to wear a mask (that covers your nose and mouth), wash your hands, and practice social distancing. Everyone wants this pandemic to be over, but, until it is, it’s so important that you continue to remain diligent with these safety practices. These practices will not only help to keep you safe and healthy, but they will do the same for those that you care about and are in regular contact with.
Try Your Best – There is no substitute for hard work. Put forth your best effort, and remember to ask questions when you don’t understand. Asking questions is a sign of intelligence, and trying your best will leave you feeling proud of yourself.
Be Patient – Your teachers and our staff here at the HS are in your corner. They’ve been working very hard to prepare for this school year. Please show them how courteous and responsible you are as they try their best to help you learn.
Get Involved – Our school has an excellent variety of extracurricular activities. Getting involved is a great way to explore your interests, make new friends, and feel connected to our school community.
Have Fun – High school goes by quickly! Enjoy it! High school students can sometimes perseverate over the one thing that didn’t go their way. Don’t forget how special you are and all that you have going for you!
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here to help.
Looking forward to a great year,
Mr. Cogan
Principal, FTMHS
Dear Parents,
I hope this letter finds you and your families healthy, safe, and enjoying the end of the summer.
On behalf of the Florence Township Memorial High School faculty and staff, I’d like to welcome you to our school for the 2020 – 2021 school year! Florence is a special place, and likewise, its schools are special in that they offer our students an opportunity to learn and grow within a very caring and supportive environment.
In order for your children, our students, to achieve their very best, it’s important that we work together. Although we have many wonderful teachers at FTMHS, we believe that every child’s first and most influential teacher is his or her parent or guardian. Your children respect and admire you. They watch you and listen carefully to your words. By working as partners, we will be able to communicate a very clear and consistent message to our young people.
Our goal at the High School is to provide each of our students with an excellent education. We believe that in order for this to occur, our school must have a culture of learning that is well-grounded in the principles of respect, achievement, and integrity. All people deserve respect at all times. Achievement is tied directly to effort – our young people need to understand that in order for them to achieve their dreams they must be willing to work hard now. Lastly, being a person of integrity means that you do the right thing simply because it’s the right thing to do. We need your support in driving this message home to your children.
It is vital that there is open and clear communication between school and home. Over the course of the school year, you can expect to receive information from our school about a variety of other topics. Please never hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, counselor, or any of our school staff with any questions or concerns. We are eager to work with you to help your children succeed.
Along those lines, here is some important information that we’d like to share with you for the beginning of the 2020-21 school year:
Welcome Aboard!
We are thrilled to add the following individuals to our FTMHS staff:
- Ms. Kimberly Davis, Special Education Teacher
- Mr. Eric Hoffman, Spanish Teacher
- Mr. Kyle Kaminskas, Athletic Director/Assistant Principal
- Mr. Matthew Senni, Math Teacher
We believe that these staff members are dynamic, and they will benefit our students and our school!
Genesis Parent Portal
The Genesis Parent Portal (http://bit.ly/2hqH935) will be open at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28th. Please log in to see your child’s academic schedule for the upcoming school year. Afterwards, please continue to use this extremely valuable tool to monitor your child’s grades, assignments, attendance, and to complete/update/sign-off on important electronic forms.
100% Remote Instruction
As you know from Dr. Ambrosius’s recent communication (https://bit.ly/3lkP8vA), our District will be starting the school year with 100% remote instruction from September 8th – September 18th. Here is our High School’s schedule for that window of time: https://bit.ly/34BLvLY.
September 21st
On September 21st, the District’s plan is to pivot to a hybrid model, and all of our HS students will need to follow this schedule: https://bit.ly/3lpfdd4. Parents who communicated that they would like to keep their children home for 100% remote instruction will be able to continue to do so. Parents who communicated that they would like their children to go to school for in-person instruction every other week will begin to see that happen as per the Blue and Gold groups that we’ve created and this Blue & Gold Calendar: https://bit.ly/3gBs0W6.
As you can see, the week of the 21st is a Blue week, so only students in our Blue group will be permitted to come to school that week. All of the students in our Gold group as well as all of the students who are in our 100% Remote group will continue learning from home through virtual means. If you are unsure what group your child is in, please log in to Genesis where you will see “100% Remote,” “Blue,” or “Gold” identified for him or her. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s School Counselor or me.
Textbooks & Chromebooks
Our teachers and staff have worked very hard to ensure that all of our students will start the school year with the books they need for their classes. A personalized bag will be available for pick up for each of our High School students that contains the specific books that he or she will need for the courses he or she is taking this year. We are asking our parents/students to come in and pick up these bags by HR as per this schedule: https://bit.ly/3hIKbKA.
All of our students should still have their school-issued Chromebooks from last year. If you need a Chromebook for your child, please contact Mr. Mukesh Gupta, our Director of Technology, at mgupta@florence.k12.nj.us.
Google Classroom
Our teachers will be creating Google Classrooms for their classes. They will use this platform to post/send important information to our students, including links to their virtual classes.
Classes
All of our classes will be live this year and student attendance is mandatory. Here is a poster that was created by one of our District’s committees over the summer that is intended to highlight our High School’s expectations and recommendations for virtual learning: https://bit.ly/31vthK7.
9th Grade Orientation
Representatives from our High School’s Student Council came into school recently and created a Virtual 9th Grade Orientation for our incoming 9th graders. We will post this video in the September edition of our NewsFlash, which is scheduled to go home on August 31st. Special thanks to our students and Mrs. Rodan-Ryan for all of their hard work!
Academic Achievement Program
This is a wonderful program! We will once again be challenging our students to settle for nothing less than their best. We want to see our students succeed, and we will be communicating to them that we want them to set their sights on earning a GPA of at least a 3.0 (or a “B” average) with no “D” or “F” grades in any course for each marking period of the school year. Please join us in challenging your child to be content with nothing less than his or her best effort!
Students who earn at least a 3.0 (with no “D’s” or “F’s”) will be recognized and celebrated throughout the school year for their academic accomplishments.
Principal’s Academic List
Each marking period, students who earn A’s in all of their courses will be assigned to
the “Principal’s Academic List.” We have students who are hungry to show what they can do, and we’re eager to recognize them!
Character Education Program
Every month at least one student – from each grade level – will be recognized for the fine job he/she has done in bringing the word of the month to life. These students are nominated by our school staff. The Character Education “Word of the Month” for September is Friendliness. We will communicate the rest of our character education traits to you over the course of the school year.
Let’s work together to get our students to focus on why each trait matters! We need all of our students to see that they can help others through their positive words and actions.
We know that these are difficult times, but we are looking forward to working with you to make this a great year for your children.
Thank you, as always, for all of your help and support!
Please never hesitate to reach out to me for any reason.
Sincerely,
John Cogan

Computer Science Club
This club will meet once every other week to work on web design, coding, drones, robots, and any other tech we can get our hands-on. We will look at tech issues in the district and try to solve problems that students and teachers are having. The goal here is to not only have a good time but create a club that others can rely on to help with tech issues and make tech more useful for teachers and students.
Cultural Awareness for Everyone Club (CAFE)
Introducing and educating students on cultural diversity. Online resources will be utilized extensively to explore music, culture, and art unique to each culture. Each month a different culture will be highlighted.
Students may run contests to involve the student body and attract new members. Monthly celebrations will explore unique culinary cultural differences.
An emphasis on what we have in common will be a prevailing theme. Other staff members will be invited to share stories of their cultural experiences.
Debate Team
If you like to discuss current issues and win arguments, then you may want to try out for our school’s debate team. Debate involves opposing viewpoints on important public policy issues.
Through debate, students deepen their understanding of public affairs. They also learn to find a hook, formulate an argument, sharpen their speaking and writing skills, and spot and exploit weaknesses in opponents’ arguments.
Our team competes in the South Jersey Debate League beginning in December each year. Participating in debate will help you grow in meaningful ways, as you refine your own skills and mentor new team members, and thus will contribute to your future success in college and beyond.
Environmental Club
The Environmental Club will raise awareness of NJ’s diverse environment. Students will get to attend "virtual" field trips.
Game Club
The Game Club will nostalgically play board game classics like Chess and Parcheesi, but also see activities centered around Boggle and Scrabble for vocabulary reinforcement, Monopoly and The Game of Life for Financial Literacy interactions.
Aside from these games, there are often numerous card/board games being released each year. We also wish to have games on video consoles.
There will be officers established in this student-run club and a Google Classroom where club procedures and expectations will be posted. Elected officials and club committees will set up game assignments and club events.
It will be our goal to create an inclusive club environment that would be competitive, but also respectful, intelligent, fun, and caring. There will be a possibility of tournaments occurring in between bi-weekly meeting days.
Since we are going "virtual" this year for clubs, our games may be modified.
Marching Band
Marching Band is a co-curricular activity that consists of both instrumental music students and guard members. The Marching Band rehearses outside of the school day and is an ensemble that provides spirit and enthusiasm for school and community events.
The Band competes in a marching band circuit as well as performing for football games. The bands’ performances are an artistic balance and blend of intense marching drill, highly visual equipment work, and musical repertoire.
The Marching Band is a highly active disciplined ensemble demanding dedication and responsibility from all its members. The Band, on many occasions, acts as ambassadors for our school and community by performing not only locally, but throughout the tri-state area.
Since we are going "virtual" this year, we are not quite sure what this will look like.
Musical
Open auditions for the school musical will take place in December. Students of all grades and levels of experience are invited to audition at that time. Information will be available closer to December.
Since we are going virtual this year with our clubs, our "Musical" may be very different....
National Honor Society
The members of this Society are selected by a Faculty Council of teachers. Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be members of the sophomore or junior class and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 at the time of selection. Students who are eligible academically are notified and then considered for selection based on the high qualities of leadership, service, and character.
Academically eligible students are given an application packet. This packet requires the applicant to discuss their leadership, character, citizenship, and service qualifications. The application packet is individually reviewed by each member of the Faculty Council. Finally, applicants will participate in a group interview with the Faculty Council.
Seven- and one-half hours per marking period of community service (for a minimum total of 30 hours for the year) are required by all inducted members while maintaining the 3.8 GPA and a clean discipline record. NHS members serve the Florence and surrounding communities throughout the year by volunteering for numerous events, charities, clothing, and food drives, etc.
Newspaper
The Newspaper Club will give students the opportunity to experience being a journalist for both school and local events.
Students will learn the basics of writing a story and be able to consider being a photographer for events.
All students are welcome to come to our monthly meetings to learn more and see what events are being covered in the upcoming issue.
Interact Club
The 2020-2021 Interact Officers are:
President: Rajveer Kaur
Vice President: Fabiha Usha
Secretary: Hazal Akkaya
Treasurer: Logan Trayner
Sergeant at Arms: Gusahajpreet Singh
Interact is a service-based club, sponsored by the Bordentown Rotary. Students must participate in a minimum of 20 service hours per year. Projects include volunteering at a local
assisted living facility, assisting various community groups with projects, and helping with collection drives to benefit people in need.
Each student is required to pay $25 in dues, which covers the cost of two shirts to be worn when individuals are participating in club service projects.
Student Council
Student Council
President: Grace Skinner
Vice President: Cassaundra Alicea
Secretary: Finley Charles
Treasurer: Breanna Ojeikere
BOE Rep.: Gabrielle Fleming
Historians: Mya Cabanas-Montero and Michael Dunphy
Executive Members: Maiyah McDuffie and Sarah Olatubosun
The Student Council was formed for the purpose of training a representative group of students who would meet regularly to talk over student-related problems, ideas and suggestions, be a liaison between administration, faculty and student body and be the official representative body of the school.
Working with the Administration and Faculty, the Student Council will suggest improvements, assist in the orientation of new students, and help organize the social events calendar for the high school.
The Student Council attempts to improve the school by giving voice to student ideas. Great responsibility rests with this organization. It is most effective and successful when it has the cooperation and support of the entire student body.
Student Council members include the class officers and homeroom representatives who are elected at the beginning of each school year. Any student who would like to be involved can apply for general membership to assist with projects. Our goal is to have 100% involvement from the student body.
Student Council sponsors various activities throughout the school year. Activities for the fall are: Food drive; toy drive; and the Trunk or Treat. Various collection drives and service projects are also sponsored throughout the year to assist the high school and the Florence Township community.
Yearbook
The members of this club are responsible for the writing and composing, the printing and publishing of the school yearbook.
Members are expected to help with fundraising, especially through ad sales.

Character Education -- September Character Trait is "Friendliness"
Character is what you do when you think no one else is looking.
Our September Character Trait is "Friendliness."
The development of GOOD CHARACTER is not an isolated skill to be taught in one area of a child’s life. It is an effort of home, school, and community to instill in our young people good values. The development of good character touches our personal development, it impacts our success with academic development in learning, and good character is essential in the workforce to be successful in our careers.

The counselors diligently reviewed student course requests and created schedules to meet students’ needs and desires. Changes to scheduled courses will be very difficult due to the nature of the altered school day and due to COVID-19 classroom capacities. If you feel a change is necessary and justifiable, please contact your counselor and the request will be reviewed. There are no guarantees that courses and schedules can and will be changed.
Dual Credit RCBC Courses
Seniors who chose to take an RCBC Online Dual Enrollment course as an elective will take it during the Spring 2021 semester. The Florence School District will cover the tuition cost, but the cost of the textbook will be the responsibility of the student. There may be some assistance available for those students on free/reduced lunch. Online Dual Enrollment courses are taught and graded by RCBC professors. Official final grades will be posted on permanent transcripts for both FTMHS and RCBC.
