Truth and Consequences Field Trip for 8th Grade
On Thursday, our eighth graders went to a drug and alcohol awareness program called “Truth and Consequences” at Bondurant Middle School. During the program, we were given a scenario and we had to learn about the consequences of those scenarios. The scenarios ranged anywhere from hardcore felonies to minor offenses.
One scenario stated “ Under the influence of methamphetamine, I decided to rob a gas station at gunpoint. I got away with the money before the police arrived, but my face showed up on the security video. I was charged with armed robbery.” With this situation, the student learned that they would have had 10 to 20 years in prison and that they would have limited career options. They would have also learned about the risks of addiction and even death, learning from family members of someone who overdosed.
After we went through the booths that simulated the consequences of our actions, we were given a demonstration on the importance of wearing a seat belt. There were representatives from the Department of Transportation’s Road Safety Department there to simulate a car rollover. The simulator showed that, without a seat belt, you can be severely injured, and even die, in a car wreck.
We also listened to presentations from one of the survivors of the Carroll County bus crash and from a parent of someone who overdosed. We sat in a bus similar to the bus that crashed in the Carroll County bus crash, caused by drunk driving. Truth and Consequences was a very impactful event. It really made me think about the impact that drugs can have on your life.
Flu Shots- Are they trustworthy?
by Margaret W. and Katie N.
Our school will be giving out flu shots on Tuesday, October 30. The question is do vaccinations actually help with getting the flu? Studies show that flu shots reduce the risk of getting the illness from 40-60%. So, flu shots do not give you full coverage when it comes to having the illness. In fact, flu shots are only good for around two weeks. Flu shots start in September and end as late as May. Therefore, it would be in your best interest to get a flu shot in late October or early November. We personally believe that people should be vaccinated in order to stay even mostly safe from the disease, but if that's not for you then your the one that wants to take that chance. Overall, remember that whether you get the vaccination or not, you should try your best to stay safe and healthy through the cold and winter months!

7th Graders Visit the Grand Theater for Music and Culture Experience
by David R. and Isaiah W.
This Wednesday the 7th grade went to the Grand Theatre to see Tito Puente, Jr., and Melina Almodovar. They put on an interactive and fun performance of Afro Cuban and Latin music. Almodovar taught the audience how to do the Salsa dance and brought people on stage to dance with her while Tito played percussion Instruments like the clave, conga, and timballes. They sang songs like “Oye como va” and taught us about the culture of Latin music. Thanks to the PTSA, Southern Arts, Dr. Hensley, and our teachers for making this possible! My love for school- A haiku story

Second Street School is
The only school I’ve been to
I know the teachers
Some teachers I know
But some of them are quite new
I get to know them
4 Principals here
Since I have gone to this school
I can’t choose the best
My home is this school
No one can take that away

Consumed
by Shelby M.
The streets are silent
The sky is dark
The rain pours down
Thunder slaps in the distance
Clouds fill the street
Light posts flicker
Doors are locked
Windows are no more
The sound of laughter
The sound of bells
No one is there
No family no animal
This is a town
This is a ghost town
The most lively place
Now gone
The town is everywhere
The town is only you
The town is everybody
It's how they all feel

Halloween Facts
by Ella D.
Samhainophobia is the medical term for a pathological fear of Halloween.
Legend has it that if you see a spider on Halloween night, it means a loved one is watching over you.
According to legend, if you put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards at Halloween, you’ll see a witch at midnight.
During the celebrations associated with All Soul’s Day on November 2, poor people would knock on the doors of wealthy citizens and be given pastries as treats. Like guising, souling was a precursor to modern trick-or-treating.
In the 1940s, trick or treating was halted because war-time rationing had curtailed the use of sugar.
50% of children prefer to receive chocolate on Halloween over other types of treats. 24% of children like candy, and 10% would choose gum. Toothbrushes didn’t make the list.

Kroger Shooting Incident
by Campbell S.
On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, in Jefferson County, a shooting happened in a Kroger. Two were killed at the scene, a man inside and a woman outside in the parking lot. The suspect was apprehended more details about the shooting continue to come in. Both victims were black while the shooter was white leading many people to suspect that was his motive. A few minutes before the shooting, he was caught trying to break into a black church to possibly hurt others before he moved to the Kroger.
The suspect, Gregory Bush, 51, entered the Kroger with a pistol and shot a man in the back of the head before continuing to shoot him as he laid on the ground. The man’s 12-year-old grandson watched as Bush killed him. Bush then walked out of the building and fired multiple shots at a woman before killing her. Another man, Ed Harrell, got out of his car asking what was going on after pulling a gun as Bush replied, “Don’t shoot me. I won’t shoot you. Whites don’t shoot whites.”
Bush then got into his car and drove away from the Kroger. The police then apprehended the suspect on Hurstbourne Parkway. This case has left many people skeptical about if gun violence is coming back stronger as it had at the beginning at the year. Police have confirmed that the Kroger will be reopened as people mourn for this shooting.
Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Knows A Lot,
My best friend recently started dating my ex, and it's really hard to hang out with them without seeing my ex.
Sincerely,
Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
This is a really difficult situation, but I think I can help. Firstly, I think you should discuss this with your friend. You should ask them if you guys can hang out alone, because you're uncomfortable around your ex. If this does not work, ask your friend to do something that your ex hates. For example, if your ex hates swimming, go to the pool. If this still does not work, tell your friend that you don't want to see your ex and won't hang out with them when your ex is there, basically see if your friend can set aside time for just you guys.
Sincerely,
Miss Knows a Lot
Dear Mrs. Helping Hands,
I really like someone, but I don't think they know I exist and I can't work up the courage to talk to them. Please help me.
Sincerely,
Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
Basically what you want to do is try and be around them more. If you see this person in the hallway try to make eye contact with them. Try and cross paths accidentally with this person. Also, try to impress them in sports, academics and other extracurricular activities. Attempt to look nice and dress up a little. But don't completely change yourself while doing this. When you see this person, act normal and calm. Hope my advice helped and good luck!
Sincerely,
Miss Helping Hands
