Aboriginal Language
Language is extremely important to the Aboriginal peoples.Language carry culture knowledge, so the loss af a language which means the loss of culture, of Aboriginal people's connection to their ancestors.
"The important thing about language and what it means is that the language contains the essence of our ancestors, every word comes from place and identifies people and links to the land, country, the dreaming: they are all inherent in language, therefore it means the people, the land, everything. Language is important to the Aboriginal people because loss of colture means loss of language so if you get told you can no longer speak your language so they say you cant speak your language then that would make you feel like a nobody like you have no background.
PLACE NAMES
The Aboriginal name for Shellharbour has been recorded asb both Yerrowah ( meeting place). The Eurpoean name for Shellharbour refers to the large quantaties of shells found in Aboriginal midddens along the foreshore in the early to mid 19th century. Due to the mining of shells in the mid 19th century for the product of lime these vast middens no longer remain.
