Report Card Reminder
Report cards were posted to Family Access last Friday, March 8. Please log in to Family Access to review your child’s report card, if you have not already done so. The following tips may be helpful to you in discussing the report card with your child:
- Remember, relinquish your attachment to the grades, they belong to your child, not you.
- Set aside time to discuss the report with your child without distractions. Be sure to talk about more than reading and math...how was attendance? Specials? Work habits and behaviors? Teacher comments?
- Ask your child what they are proud of and what they would like to improve on.
- Discuss goal setting for the next grading period, steps they could take, and how you can support. Are the goals reasonable and challenging?
- Encourage your child and tell them what you are proud of on their report card and celebrate together.
Thank you for your support!

State Testing - Forward Exam
Think back to your elementary school days...do you remember #2 pencils, filling in bubbles, and the phrase pencils down? Yes, standardized testing season is upon us.
Oconomowoc students in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10 will participate in the Wisconsin Forward Exam this spring. This online test is designed to gauge how well students are mastering the Wisconsin Academic Standards in English Language Arts (grades 3 through 8), Math (grades 3 through 8), Science (grades 4 and 8) and Social Studies (grades 4, 8, and 10). Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area. Each score will fall in one of four levels: Advanced, Proficient, Basic, and Below Basic. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction also uses Forward Exam results to evaluate school performance.
The Forward Exam will be given in schools across the state between March 18 and May 3, 2019. We will begin testing on March 19 in some classrooms. Your child’s teacher will specify test dates in a separate communication for their classrooms. Please be aware of the testing schedule, talk about it as a family, and why it is important for students to give their best effort. The Forward Exam is an untimed assessment...estimated times for test administration are:
- 2 hours and 10 minutes for English Language Arts,
- 1 hour and 30 minutes
- 2 hours for Science (4th grade only)
- 1 hour and 10 minutes for Social Studies (4th grade only)
An online training tool is accessible via the OASD website to give students practice with the tools available on the Forward Exam. It also gives students a chance to work with the different item types they will encounter. Your child’s teacher will review this training with students before testing. Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.
As always, please feel free to call or email me or your child’s school with any questions you have about student assessment.

PBIS Update
This month our PBIS focus is on kindness on the playground. Teachers and staff will be on the lookout for students who are being kind to one another outside at recess. If students are “caught being kind” they will have their name written on a heart to be placed on the Kindness Thermometer hung up in the hallway. As they earn hearts, our school will earn celebrations! The first incentive students are working towards is an all school Color Day where each grade level wears a different color. Students can even work their way up to the final celebration of a grade level movie! Be sure to talk with your kids about what they are doing to work on being kind on the playground.
