Attendance Encouragement
Attending school has a huge impact on student success. This year we want to make sure every student misses no more than 9 days of school, or 1 day a month. We need your help.
Some Attendance Tips to Promote Student Learning:
- Make sure your students keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine so they are rested and alert when they get to school.
- Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones and tablets at bedtime.
- Make sure clothes and pack backpacks are ready the night before.
- Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
- Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feel anxious about going to school.
- Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.
Please let us know how we can best support you and your student so that they can show up for school on time every day.

Let’s Get eReading!
Open eBooks
Kids are very excited to use the Open eBook app at home. Tuesday kids brought home their username and password. As you know from our last newsletter, I have been working on getting our school enrolled in Open eBooks. Families have been downloading and use the Open eBooks app for free. Open eBooks is an app containing thousands of popular and award-winning titles that are free for kids from in-need communities. As a Title school, McBride now qualifies to participate in the program. Readers can immediately download some of the most popular works of the past and present, with no costs, no holds, no late fees, and they are available on the weekends and during vacations. Titles were selected by the Digital Public Library of America’s (DPLA) Curation Corps comprised of school and youth librarians. Visitors can browse the online catalog to view the collection.
We hope the Open eBooks app helps you to further support and engage in your child’s learning and foster their love of reading beyond the classroom.

This week 3rd - 6th grade have been taking home signup information for Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB). The kids from last year said they enjoyed OBOB and are looking forward to it again this year. Registrations are due back at school Friday, October 5th.
Have Fun Reading!

Music Memos
Music Memos
This week in music, we are continuing to review concepts in grades first through sixth and working on behavioral expectations through songs and movement in kindergarten. This round of lessons, upper grades are reviewing a series of songs by Beethoven and Mozart and how to differentiate between them by major/minor, instrument groups, and genre. Younger grades are reviewing ta, ti-ti, and sh through rhythm practice and songs.
Don’t forget, Blue and Sapphire Choirs meet every Tuesday students attend school, and we meet in the music room. Please note, if your choir student is on safety patrol, he/she needs to communicate with the crossing guard afternoon supervisors to ensure your student is put on the front station #3 (with Mr. Lansdell) to get to choir as soon as possible on Tuesday afternoons. They are aware of the time conflict, but may not know who is also in choir. Thank you!
One funny story from this week, a third grader heard an instructional assistant refer to having a “poker face” for a song game, and the student turned and said to me, “I know what a poker face is, I’ve heard the song!”. The assistant and I laughed together and the student just smiled back.
As always, feel free to call, email, or stop by if you have questions or would just like to say “hi”!.

The Reading Team Report
The Reading Team Report
McBride Elementary makes a difference by supporting young readers with targeted and intensive reading interventions. These interventions are provided by Mrs. Sumsion, Mrs. Shiel, Mrs. Stobbe, Mrs. Flock, Mrs. Nielsen, and Mrs. Johnstun. Our students come to us for about 25 minutes of small group instruction. This means that we can give them time, individual attention, and extra practice. Between us all we’ve had years of experience of teaching reading! All of us love to read, love kids, and are proud to be Mustangs!

September 24-28
This week in PE, we have played different games and activities for each grade. 3rd through 6th grade played a variation of the game of dodgeball, while K - 2nd played different tag games. It was great to see the positive attitudes and strategies used during our dodgeball game. The 1st and 2nd graders had a blast playing Dino-Tag and Zombie-Tag. Kindergarten played Turtle-Tag and had tons of fun. It has been awesome to see the enthusiasm and competitiveness that the students have shown. The attitudes and effort are excellent.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Your child needs to wear or bring tennis shoes everyday for the gym. This is a safety issue for your child so they may safely participate in the activities!
Do not hesitate to contact me via email or stop by the class with questions!

School Support
Week 3 - Student Support
During our classroom lessons we have reviewed learning ready, the voice scale, and “expected” and “unexpected” school behaviors. We have just begun to introduce students to their “upstairs brain” by showing the video. https://vimeo.com/218848980
Around the school, staff continues to reteach and reward expected behaviors. Individual students can earn “caught-ya’s” when they are caught doing the right thing. Ask your student how they can earn a caught-ya. Also, ask your student how the school earned mustaches to wear today at our assembly.

"Together - Make a Difference" Awards
Teachers at McBride -
Chris Stewart, Katie Quick, Breighley Sexton, Alex Peterson, Rosalie Sumsion and Heidi Green
Students at McBride -
Bosston and Lucy Durrant, Caleb Cupp, Kaeley and Owen Brummer
This team has been nominated for the Together - We Make A Difference award because of the time spent before school started creating the Teach Tos for McBride. Thank you for this group of actors and supervisors providing quick, awesome videos for staff and students to watch the expectations in action.
Rosalie Sumsion - Mrs. Sumsion was nominated by another colleague who appreciates her willingness to support in any situation regardless of how busy Mrs. Sumsion is. She makes herself available.
St. Helens Credit Union - Our friends at St. Helens Credit Union donated warm coats to our clothes closet. Thank you so much St. Helens Credit Union!
Grandma Betty & Grandpa Richard - These two grandparents (no relation to each other) are very special to our Mustang community. They are here every day working! Grandma Betty works in classrooms and she spends most of her time working and doing tasks for the office and Mrs. Tyler. Grandpa Richard works with multiple grade levels supporting students in their learning. These two are amazing supports to our Mustang Community!
St. Helens Starbucks - St. Helens donated a large container of coffee for our Grandparents Day event earlier this month. Thank you for partnering with us for this event! We appreciate it so much!
Rob Henningsen - Mr. Rob was our day custodian while Mr. Scott was on vacation for two weeks. We appreciated Mr. Rob in his spider slaying, fire drill preparing, cafeteria cleaning, port-a-potty moving efforts. Thank you Mr. Rob!
