October/November 2018
Fall Weather is Here!
Now that fall is upon us (and winter is right around the corner), we know that temperatures can swing very quickly. Please make sure that your child comes dressed for conditions. We will go outside for recess as long as the "feels like" temperature is 10 degrees or above.
Please plan accordingly and pay attention to the weather conditions. Also, please make sure to label your child’s coats and sweatshirts. This will result in fewer items in our lost and found.
We Need Your Numbers!
Please keep these numbers current with Mrs. Petty in the office so we can contact you quickly if needed!
Montessori's Partnership with Lou's Thrifty-Way
Sometimes, these school-business partnerships can be a one-way street, with the business doing the majority of the giving and the school doing the receiving! We wanted to brainstorm some ways that we could show our appreciation to Lou's and kick off this partnership.
Last week, we delivered a homemade card to the store, complete with the Daily News story on how Lou's had just been inducted into the Norfolk Hall of Fame. Our students also decorated 115 paper grocery bags with fall items and scenes. Those "custom bags" are hidden in the stacks of bags that the store has. So the next time you get a shopping bag at Lou's, it may be one that has been decorated by one of our students. We also plan to do this again around Thanksgiving and then again in the spring.
Lou's has agreed to help us recognize our students' successes, including providing some treats to help celebrate our students of the week.
As this partnership grows, we are already thinking of bigger and better ways that the partnership can benefit both Lou's Thrifty-Way and our Montessori students.

Information about Head Lice
No, we do not have an outbreak of head lice at Montessori! But whenever you have 230 students (including our Little Panthers) in close quarters, you're bound to have it sometime. In addition, it seems like October and early November in Nebraska are prime time for head lice to appear. Here are the steps the school (and you) can take to minimize your exposure to head lice:
Screening for head lice is done as the need arises. Infected children will be excluded from school until treatment is received and lice are cleared. We suggest that you examine your child's hair at the beginning of the school year and periodically throughout the year. If you detect head lice or nits, contact the school nurse so that we can give you further information and examine students in your children's classes. Also, notify the parents of your children's playmates so that they can check their hair.
INFORMATION ABOUT HEAD LICE:
The head louse usually stays on the head, attaching its eggs (nits) to the shaft of the hairs. Lice can reproduce quite rapidly since the eggs usually hatch within a week and the newly hatched young reach maturity and reproduce eggs within two or three weeks. Lice lay eggs on the hair shaft. The eggs are white or gray in color. They look like dandruff, but cannot be brushed or shaken off the hair.
TRANSMISSION OF HEAD LICE:
Lice are usually acquired by direct contact with an infected person or indirectly by contact with personal belongings, especially clothing or headgear. Long hairstyles, the use and exchange of headbands, and the use and exchange of protective headgear in athletic programs create conditions for lice to spread.
TREATMENT OF HEAD LICE:
Several types of shampoo prescribed to kill lice are on the market. You may consult your physician for recommended treatment.
PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY FOR NONPRESCRIPTION LICE TREATMENTS:
- Use shampoo as directed.
- Use Debac comb (fine-toothed comb) to remove nits (lice eggs).
- Put on clean clothes after shampooing and bathing.
- Wash all clothing, towels, and bed linens used by persons with head lice; using very hot water and soap.
- Dry-clean all clothing (including hats and coats) that cannot be washed.
- All initially-infected persons should be retreated in 8-10 days.
- To prevent spread, articles that come in contact with the head, neck, or shoulders should not be shared. (For example: combs, brushes, towels, hats, coats, etc.
