ConVal High School Happenings - September 17, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
It was nice to have our first full five-day week together in school. We celebrated a spirited ConVal Games to kick off the homecoming activities on campus today. Students participated in numerous offerings and the junior class was the overall winner of the games. I am pictured above with the Sophomore class advisors who took an opportunity to sell items to raise money for their class. For more details on the day, please click here to see the web post.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate as a partner with the Unified Soccer team. We scrimmaged the JV girls soccer team and had a great afternoon of friendly competition and fun! Please click here to see the web post.
All week, students have been collecting non-perishable items for NH Tackles Hunger. Some of our student athletes were even featured on WMUR this week with a picture of them shopping for items at a local Hannaford. Please click here to see the web post.
I look forward to seeing you at our Open House on Wednesday evening from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm. If you aren't able to join us in person, please know that you can directly reach out to your students' teachers for any updates or questions.
I look forward to heading out shortly on the golf cart to visit all of our home games on campus. Best of luck to all of our teams competing today.
Go Cougars!

NH Tackles Hunger
Throughout the week, our students have had the opportunity to drop off canned goods in bins just inside the main entrance.
We began collecting Monday, September 13, 2021 and will end on Saturday, September 18, 2021. Items can be brought to any of the homecoming games. To view the homecoming games schedule, please click HERE. If you would like to make a direct donation online, please click HERE to help out the Peterborough Food Pantry.
In the past, we have collected over $2,500, and thousands of pounds of food. It would be great to top that to help tackle hunger here in our community.

Running Start Information/Update
This opportunity allows students to earn transcripted college credit at the same time as they earn high school credit. The Governor's STEM scholarship was expanded this year to include all CTE courses as well, which means that the first two STEM and/or CTE Running Start eligible classes that a student takes this school year will be free of charge to the student and the school district!
Students who take more than two Running Start STEM and/or CTE classes or students taking College Composition will still be able to earn these credits for free; these credits are paid for with support of the ConVal School Board. Students in the classes below will be learning more about this opportunity in the upcoming weeks.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jennifer Kiley @ jkiley@conval.edu or see the Nashua Community College representative at Open House on September 22!

Contemporary Band covers Nirvana’s Sliver
Seven of Mr. Wickham’s music students met this week to start a new band. Going by the working name Contemporary Band, the group is made up of Mr. Wickham’s current and former Introduction to Guitar and Concert Band students. The goal of Contemporary Band is to provide more opportunities for students to perform guitar and keyboard for large audiences. The students began their collaboration with the song Sliver, written and recorded by Nirvana in 1990. They hope to add new members and are especially looking for keyboardists. Any ConVal student interested in joining, and renaming, Contemporary Band is encouraged to let Mr. Wickham know.
ConVal Student Athletes Support NH Tackles Hunger Campaign
On Wednesday, twelve ConVal student athletes went to Hannaford to purchase food items in support of this year's NH Tackles Hunger Campaign.
To make this community service activity competitive, the students were split into teams and given a set "budget." Their goal was to buy nonperishable healthy foods and try to make meals that they would want to eat — not an easy task.
Students used their phone calculators to stay within their team's given budget and spent over an hour to spend $50 while making careful choices.
"Every year this might be one of my favorite parts of this program," said Conval School Board member Katherine Heck. "Students really learn what shopping on a tight budget looks like."
"The students' behavior was exemplary, as were their manners," Heck added.
Unified Soccer Team Plays Friendly Scrimmage
On Thursday afternoon, the ConVal Unified Soccer Team (in the white uniforms) played a friendly scrimmage against the Junior Varsity ConVal Cougars Soccer Team.
The Unified Team was well-coached from the sidelines by co-coaches Emeric Szep and Zak Shapiro. Great defensive plays on both sides led to intensely fought midfield duels that turned into solid chances on the far ends of the field to score goals.
A special guest at the scrimmage was ConVal Principal Heather McKillop. “I was so honored to be invited to be a partner for the Unified scrimmage,” McKillop said after the game. “Every time I looked up, I saw teammates smiling and cheering each other on.”
“Both teams played hard and the crowd was constantly cheering loudly. I am so proud of both teams and ecstatic that our Unified team captured the victory with a score of 12-7. Go ConVal!”
Chromebook Fee Information
If they have not done so already, parents/guardians may still opt to pay the annual $25 Chromebook fee.
If the fee has been paid for the 2021-2022 school year, repairable damage to the device will be covered. If the cost of the repair exceeds the cost of the device, students will be charged for and will receive a replacement Chromebook for only $75. The fee can be paid online through the K12 Payment Center (www.k12paymentcenter.com). You may also bring in a check, payable to ConVal High School, in the amount of $25.00 or cash in the exact amount.
Regardless of whether or not the Chromebook fee has been paid, a student who intentionally damages or defaces a Chromebook will be charged the full repair or replacement cost for the device.
If a family is experiencing financial difficulties, please contact Lori Schmidt, the Business Administrator of the ConVal School District, either by phone 924-3336 ext. 2029 or by email (lschmidt@conval.edu).
Important Note: The Chromebook Fee is not retroactive. It will not cover damage that occurred before the Chromebook Fee has been paid.
