MCHS Science Olympiad Team
January 12th of this year was the official start for this year's Marine City High School Science Olympiad at the Perry High School Invitational. Marine City sent both it's Varsity and J.V. teams to compete. The Varsity took 2nd place and the J.V team took 11th out of 20 teams. For the next three Saturdays both teams will face off to tough competition at the Stephenson Eastside Invitational, followed by the Plymouth/Canton Invitational, and then finally the Frankenmuth Invitational.
Science Olympiad is an American high school team competition in which students compete in various events pertaining to scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Events fall under three main categories: Science Concepts and Knowledge, Science Processes and Thinking Skills, and Science Application and Technology. They are either knowledge-based (written tests), hands-on (example: chemistry lab practicals), or engineering based (participants construct a device to do specified tasks).
Marine City High School currently has en enrollment of 523 students. This year's team has 20 students who will be making up our Varsity team (13) and a J.V. team (7). Our team began in the 2010-2011 school year. Last year, our 7th year in existence, we qualified for the State competition at Michigan State University for the fifth year in a row!! Schools are not divided based on their sizes, they all compete equally. So a small high school from a rural town competed head to head with some of the largest schools in the state. Coach Paul Dimmer is extremely proud of his amazing academic athletes!
congrats MCHS Chorale!
MCHS Receives Grant Support from Cargill Salt
Marine City High School is pleased to announce a partnership with Cargill Salt Company. Through Cargill’s continuous support of local communities, the company accepted a grant proposal that allowed MCHS to purchase a set of chromebooks and a cart which will assist in the implementation of a flex course for our students to experience a unique learning opportunity designed to address the major issues facing our environment. This course will expose students to the knowledge and skills necessary for understanding how organisms, including humans, interact with the environment. It will provide opportunities for students to identify and analyze environmental problems, both natural and human made (with an emphasis on Michigan and our local communities), to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. The laboratory work for this course typically includes working in local ecosystems such as woods, rivers and ponds, and may include activities such as orienteering and survival. We thank Cargill for their support!
