2021-22 Transportation Update
School transportation is a service provided in accordance with numerous state and federal standards covering topics ranging from minimum bus service levels and training of bus drivers and operation of school buses.
TRANSPORTATION AUDIT
Ohio School Boards Association staff performed a transportation audit in the Spring of 2021. The goal of the audit was to identify potential changes to transportation that would increase efficiency. From the audit, the District was provide with the following recommendation in order to reduce busing costs and improve efficiency:
Eliminate “ghost riders” which are those students who were scheduled to ride but consistently did not.
Re-evaluate bus stop boundaries at all schools and condense bus stops to reduce route times.
Evaluate rider eligibility zones (Board Policy 8600)
Therefore, at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, some families may see transportation changes as a result of the recommendations that have been made.
At a minimum, Ohio public school districts are required by law to provide bus service to all public, non-public, and community school students in grades K-8 who live two miles or more from their school of attendance. Transportation of high school students is not required.
The Berea City School District provides service over and above this minimum standard. Currently, the District provides bus service to students in all grades who meet the District’s Transportation Eligibility policy. At the July 12, 2021 Board of Education meeting, the District’s policy was updated after findings from a transportation audit.
PREVIOUS POLICY
Students in grades K-5 must live 1 mile or more from their home school to be eligible for transportation service.
Students in grades 6-12 must live 1.5 miles or more from their home school to be eligible for transportation service.
UPDATED POLICY
Students in grades K-4 must live 1 mile or more from their home school to be eligible for transportation service.
Students in grades 5-12 must live 1.5 miles or more from their home school to be eligible for transportation service.
The noteworthy revision to the policy is that grade 5 is now aligned with the middle and high school at 1.5 miles or more.
In addition, beginning the 2021-2022 school year, the District will adhere to the policy/rider eligibility requirements that have been in place for years.
It is the goal of the Transportation Department to safely transport your student(s) to and from school. Please note that the District takes into account the location of a school relative to the residence and whether the school is difficult to access due to the lack of sidewalks, posted speed limits, or other hazards. When dictated by safety or other considerations, bus service is also provided to some students who live closer than one mile from their school of attendance.
If you do not hear from our Transportation Department, it is likely you have not been impacted by the policy/efficiency changes. Any parent/guardian with questions or concerns regarding your student’s bus stop should contact our Transportation Department at berea_trans@bereaschools.org or 216-898-8301.

Berea City School District Extended Program
The ExtendED Program is our before and after school program located at all the elementary schools and the middle school. It is designed for parents who work or who want some extra socialization for their children. Children in kindergarten through the age of 14 are eligible to attend.
Our program offers a wide variety of activities in a safe and enjoyable environment surrounded by very caring and nurturing staff. We try to create a home-away-from-home program where children can choose to do homework, read, go to the gym or outside playgrounds, participate in arts and crafts, play games, use the Wii for sports games or dancing, or sometimes watch a movie.
All locations open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. Door buzzers and monitors are at all locations. Staff will unlock the doors after seeing or speaking to whoever is at the door. Parents and/or guardians would then enter the ExtendED area and sign in or out their children. Children can bring breakfast in the morning or participate in the schools’ breakfast program. After school, a snack is given to all students or they can bring their own.
Annual registration is required to secure your child’s placement in the Program. The registration fee ($35 for one child; $50 for 2 or more children in the same household) is non-refundable and is not applied toward tuition.
Monthly costs are based on your registration schedule (the time dropping off students and/or picking them up after school). We offer a 10% sibling discount. The cost is $5.50 per hour. Your monthly tuition payments are based on the days of usage (3-day minimum), along with the time of drop off and/or pick up.
2021-2022 ExtendED Program Registration
Space is limited at each site. Please complete the registration forms by the end of July.
