March 2020 Newsletter
Message from Mr. Wunderlich
Spring is on our minds and the month of March brings a lot of fun activities to the elementary school. Our kids are gearing up for testing and our teachers are working hard to ensure they are ready for the spring assessments. We are excited about the progress our students are making in the classrooms and are looking forward to seeing how we did on all of our goals during testing.
We can definitely see a difference in our students this time of year. It is a time of intense instruction, as it is when we have a long stretch without interruption. It is also the time when students want to be outside and having fun. Please encourage your child to continue to work to his/her fullest potential, even when the work is at its most challenging. We are excited for them to “show what they know,” as the school year begins to wind down.
Our testing window for the MCA tests in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade opens in April. The testing calendar is available on our district website. When you have some time, I would ask that you 1) review that information thoroughly and 2) mark your calendar with assessment days that apply to your child. Refer to this calendar and outline, if possible, when scheduling daytime appointments, family vacation days, and other things that could impact attendance. I am happy to answer any questions about upcoming assessments.
Please also make sure to check the building calendar. There are many fun events from Bingo for Books to school dances that are taking place and we want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to attend! If you would like to be involved, please connect with the building Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) as there are many ways to participate.
Happy (almost) Spring!

Carlos Families please welcome Jennah Hawes to Carlos Elementry. Jennah will be starting as the secretary on March 9th. Mary's last day at Carlos Elementary is March 6th.
Here is a note from Jennah:Hi my name is Jennah Hawes and I am very excited to be apart of the Carlos Community. I have worked with the school district for 8 years. My husband, Mike, and I moved to Alexandria 10 years ago. We have three little boys, Sawyer (9), Lincoln (7), and Everett (4). It is safe to say that there is never a dull moment in our house! We are a very active family and love to spend our time at our cabin in Barnum, MN. Also, any day I get to play a little volleyball is a good day.
The GMC Showcase program will be held this year the evening of Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Alexandria Area High School Commons and Performing Arts Center. The Carlos students will perform at 7:30 p.m.
The evening will showcase student work in the commons and feature a performance from each of the schools in the Performing Arts Center. Light refreshments will be served.
News from the Office
Incoming Kindergarten Class
If you have, or know anyone who has, an incoming Kindergarten student for the 2020-2021 school year that has not heard from the school please have them contact the office.
We still have winter weather in Minnesota. Please remember to send your student to school with all winter gear, coats, hats, boots, gloves and snow pants. Students are required to go outside for morning and lunch recesses each day. Staff monitors temperatures daily to determine if we have recess outside.
Parents please call the office if your student is going to be absent from school. You can leave a message any time on the voice mail. If we do not hear from you we will make several attempts to call and if we are unable to make contact the Sheriff's office will be contacted to conduct a well child check.
Parents must come into the office and sign their child/ren into or out of the building when arriving late (arriving after 7:50) or leaving early. Students will be marked as unexcused tardy for being late unless they are late due an appointment.
Student Drop Off
Drop off time for students is 7:25 a.m. If your student needs to be dropped off at school before 7:25 a.m. please make arrangements with the office. We do not have supervision for students until 7:25 a.m..
Carlos Elementary recognizes students who exhibit the school's code of conduct. Those traits are: Honesty, Kindness, Respect, Responsibility and Fairness.
Pictured below are Carlos students who have received a Code Kid award recently.
Congratulations to all of our Code Kids!
