Continually Improving Through Reflection
Reflection is an important part of teaching, but often our busy schedules preclude it. Reflection is critical to our growth as educators. Now, several weeks into Winter Semester is a good time to reflect on how the semester is going. Routines have been established and things have begun to settle down. Consider the following: Am I using the pacing guide as intended? Do I need some additional support in order to better utilize it? Have I incorporated any of the new ideas shared in our workshops and teacher trainings? Am I using the myriad of resources available through Futures, and the MCA links? Have I shared my student/class successes with others? Have I sought assistance in areas of need from my colleagues? Have I built a classroom environment that encourages collaboration, sharing, and teamwork? Am I speaking more than my students? How do I ensure that all students are actively involved? Am I incorporating CASAS strategies in my lessons? Am I using the unit lesson tests provided by Futures? If so, how do I use the results to drive instruction? Do I need additional support and have I requested it? Once we have properly reflected on and evaluated our teaching, we can begin to make necessary adjustments so as to be continually improving our practice.
A reflective teacher; “I planned this, and it went like this, and now I think this.”
We had over 30 participants take part in our workshop on Saturday. Adult Education teachers engaged in an all-day professional development activity focused on the integration of ESL, ABE, GED and CTE (Career and Technical Educations) content using academic, CTE and work-readiness standards and employing project- or problem-based learning focused on “real-world” issues relevant to students’ lives and interests. Relevant math programs were created using the career cluster. Thank you to all who participated and made the IPDAE workshop a success!
