FSES Friday Focus #1
We love our people!
Friday, September 23, 2016
It's been a busy 3 weeks and you are all off to a great start! Thank you for all of the hard work you've put in to ensuring that you are starting the school year with a positive classroom community!
Back to School Night was a great success. As we watched parents leave the building, they were so excited about the year ahead for their children in your classrooms. We heard so many positive comments and our community already appreciates your efforts!
As we settle into our routines, you should be meeting with small groups in Language Arts and math workshop. If you start to notice students don't seem to be reading at the spring DRA level, you may want to consider re-assessing them to have accurate data for your SMARTR goal.
Speaking of your goals, be sure to set up a goal setting conference with Tammy or Kathleen, depending on your evaluator.
Thanks for a great week and enjoy your weekend!

Professional Development on October 7
All classroom, special education, ESOL and specialists will participate in Project Collaborate on October 7. This is a McLean Pyramid professional development/collaboration for all of our McLean elementary schools. We will board a school bus here at Franklin Sherman at 8:15 a.m. and ride to Timberlane together. The focus of the morning will be facilitated conversations in horizontal or role alike groups (all second grade teachers, all PE teachers, etc). This is an opportunity for classroom teachers to continue your learning from the Homegrown Institute this summer. Specialists will be meeting together to discuss learning targets, student engagement and assessment. Special education and ESOL teachers should choose a grade level discussion to attend. Our bus will head back to FSES at 11:00 a.m. and the afternoon is open for teams to plan together.
Instructional assistants will have the morning at FSES to prepare classroom materials for teachers. In the afternoon, IA's will meet in the library at 1:00 for professional development to support our caring culture as a school. You will be learning strategies to build relationships.

National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15, 2016 – October 15, 2016)
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th. In 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Month was passed as public law in recognition of the contributions of exemplary Hispanic Americans who enriched American society with Hispanic culture. It is during this month, when our country honors five Central American nations which celebrate their independence in the month of September: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, as well as, the country of Mexico.
Hoping to bring awareness of Hispanic culture and celebrate diversity, below are some tools and resources to help celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
During the 2016-17 school year, Family and School Partnerships will also provide more information in honor of Black History Month (February) and Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May).
