A Banner Day for TCS

TCS Wins Green Ribbon District

Big picture

It’s a banner day in the Tuscaloosa City Schools as a 20-foot banner was installed at the Board of Education building after being named a Green School District on Monday. This award recognizes innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and promote environmental and sustainability education.

State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey acknowledged the efforts of TCS during a virtual celebration this afternoon.

“I very much appreciate the work that Tuscaloosa City Schools is doing and the direction that it sets for our state and our students,” said Mackey.

TCS Director of Student Literacy Dr. Terri North-Byrts led the team process for the district after earning the award at the state and national level while serving as principal of Woodland Forrest Elementary School in 2018.

“Tuscaloosa City Schools has been intentional and made many strides to address every pillar by implementing green practices throughout the district with High Expectations and using a TEAM approach,” said North-Byrts. “It is our goal to continue implementing these Green practices to reduce our carbon footprint, reuse when possible, and recycle while conserving energy.”

The three pillars include:

  • reducing environmental impacts and costs;
  • improving the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and
  • providing effective environmental and sustainability education, incorporating STEM, civic skills, and green career pathways.
