for all K-12 families of Hillsboro Online Academy

A message from the Principal

It was incredibly wonderful to see so many of you on our campus this week! We hope you were able to meet staff, get technology squared away and if you had them, get all of your questions answered!!!! I personally loved seeing all of the smiling faces on students….even on those who were being cool and trying not to look too happy about going to school, but let’s face it….we are all so glad to be back in person!

Plenty ahead…..many of you have attended orientations this week and as more students continue to enroll, more orientations will be hosted next week. I think I will host a session or two myself….maybe one in the evening virtually and one in person here at school! I might as well post dates and times right now:

  • Virtual Visiting with Linda Harrington the Principal – September 15th – 7:00 pm send me an email and we will make sure you get the link
  • Pastries (and coffee) on the Playground – September 13th – 10:00 – on our playground! We can visit while our students hangout on the playground!

You probably have some questions…every year is a new adventure, especially as we leave the last two years behind and look to a very different year. School should be so simple, but it seems that it isn’t. As a public entity there are rules and policies to adhere to and they seem to constantly be changing….but that’s just the way it is!

Speaking of new adventures…anyone up to be a bus driver for the school district? We are desperate for drivers….not necessarily because HOA has bus riders….but it does affect us too as fieldtrips are on hold due to the driver shortage and HOA loves fieldtrips!!!!! This is one of those shortages that is going to take all of us being part of the solution….so my job….drum the drum and see if you might be interested in even part time or substitute…..

I could go on and on…we have new staff to introduce, new courses, new clubs and opportunities for students and physical education is starting very soon! Guess I will save those items for next time!

Thank you for trusting us with your students….lets keep talking!

Hello from the HOA counselors!

Welcome back to school! Did you know that we have 3 wonderful counselors ready to support you? We do, and we are excited to meet you/and see you again this year!

We can assist students (and caregivers) with any of the following needs:

  • Academic skills (organization, time management, note taking, etc.)

  • Academic planning (transcript and credit review as well as graduation planning)

  • Mental health concerns (including referring to therapists and resources in the community)

  • Social concerns (making friends, empathy, etc.)

  • Career questions

  • College questions

  • Access to resources for families or students experiencing housing instability

  • Or if a student/family just needs a check-in for any reason.

Students and parents can request to talk with a counselor for any reason, counselors can meet with students over the phone, virtually, or in person.

A great way to reach out to the counselors is through the confidential counseling referral form found here: https://forms.gle/NZRSV3KgdYCp8B1u5

We look forward to meeting you!

Big picture

Welcome back to Hillsboro Online Academy! My name is Mr. Hehn, your child’s physical education teacher for k-12th grade. This year, I will be encouraging your child to learn how to be physically active in ways that assist with their physical, social, and emotional well-being.

It is my goal to help your child develop a desire for lifelong physical activity. I look forward to a productive year full of exercise, fun, and learning, through a variety of physical activities.

In physical education class, your support is greatly needed and will be greatly appreciated. Please help us in our efforts to provide a safe environment for your child, especially by being flexible with pick up and drop offs.

Listed below are the requirements for physical education:

  1. Gym Shoes that tie or Velcro. Please, no slip-ons, sandals, boots, platforms, or roller shoes. Shoes must be on at all times or they will not be able to participate in the activities safely.
  2. Shorts should be worn when wearing a skirt or dress.
  3. Jewelry should not be worn like bracelets, necklaces and long earrings.
  4. It is important that students dress comfortably because of various activities.
  5. We do have drinking fountains in the gym, but it is encouraged for students to bring a water bottle as we do go outside on nice days.

I strongly encourage all students to follow the rules for their safety and the safety of others. The rules are “Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Try Your Best!!! Together, we can encourage good health through fitness, nutrition, and exercise for a lifetime. Thank you for your help, cooperation, and support.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, I can't wait to get started and I look forward to seeing everyone in PE!
