π Spirit of Giving Week π€
As you know during January, we conducted our annual Change for Change campaign. The Change for Change Committee then formed a Roundtable to decide which organizations should receive donations. The 23 Life Changers Roundtable has selected the following organizations: Staten Island University Hospital Florina Cancer Center, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corporation, and The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
During the week of May 30, 2023 to June 2, 2023 we will be having our 12th annual Spirit of Giving Week. Besides the monetary donation, the members of the Roundtable are asking students and staff to donate specific items needed by these organizations.
The school will compete in a friendly competition called βGrade Wars.β Each day students will bring in the requested items. Each grade will receive points based on the number of items donated. On Friday, the grade with the most points will be declared the winner. The winning grade will receive an ice-cream party at a later date.
The schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday, May 30, 2023: Staten Island University Hospital Florina Cancer Center
Please donate wellness items: eye masks, travel size lotions, journals, and herbal teas.
- Wednesday, May 31, 2023: Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare
Please donate cans of cat food and cat toys.
- Thursday, June 1, 2023: The Sisters of Charity Development Corporation
Please donate seasonal/birthday party supplies: paper plates, napkins, plastic utensils.
- Friday, June 2, 2023: The Sisters of Charity Development Corporation
The children will make cards of encouragement for senior citizens in class with their teachers.
The donated items will be presented to the organizations at the Change for Change Roundtable Assembly on June 6, 2023.

A Message From Our PTA Officers
This year the P.S.23 PTA will be hosting its 17th Annual Basket Auction on June 2nd. Our Basket Auction is our biggest and most successful fundraiser of the school year. It brings in funds to help supplement costs for enrichment programs & items directly supporting our children's learning. If anyone would like to contribute an item for the auction, the Basket Auction Committee has set up an Amazon Wish List of items. If every P.S. 23 family contributes to 1 basket, we would have more than enough items to make our auction extraordinary!!!
Please click the blue text to access our Amazon Wish List .
Thank you for supporting the P.S. 23 students!

More time in school means your child will get the social-emotional and academic support they need to thrive, learn, and be happy. Your child may miss school for illness & emergencies, but we want to see every student in school every day.
π« Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow π
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
We sent home informational letters to families about their child's attendance. If the NYC DOE has flagged your child's attendance for this school year as being Chronically Absent, Potentially Chronically Absent, or At Risk for being Chronically Absent, you should have received a letter informing you of their absences. The letter is solely informational and with the hopes that our students attend school regularly when they are in good health.
If your child has COVID-19 and completes work during their 5-day quarantine, we can code them in a special way where the absence does not contribute to being "chronically absent". Again, work has to be completed and submitted to their teacher for this to apply. Please message your child's teacher and notify the attendance aide by choosing option 4 when calling the school.
We understand that many illnesses were going around, and many of our students were legitimately ill. However, we want everyone to be aware of your child's attendance record, which can be found by logging into your NYC SCHOOLS ACCOUNT , and ask that you be conscientious when arriving late to school (past 8:15 AM), planning vacations, and keeping your children out for reasons other than illness. Elementary School Attendance can help predict a student's performance in high school and whether they stay in school as they age. We want to maximize your child's school time and minimize missed instructional time. There are many things to learn while in school, including academics, learning with and from peers & teachers, as well as interacting and socializing with other students.
It is our hope that you and your family have a wonderful mid-winter recess and time is spent smiling, laughing, and loving one another! Happy Valentine' Day and President's Week.
Students and families are encouraged to submit a ticket online before calling the Help Desk.
