Preparing Students for Success - Incorporating Test Prep
There are 3 recommended strategies for teaching infographic comprehension to students: defining structure, understanding content, and interpreting design. Below is an example of an infographic in which the author uses data to organize information.
When prepping our students for tests with infographics, often they are asked to do multiple tasks. Please see the sample grade 11 M-STEP Science question from the MDE website below.

ELA Pilot Updates
K-8th Update
Our pilot teachers completed the first pilot program, Amplify CKLA, in November and began the EL Education pilot in December. The pilot for EL Education will be wrapping up on February 16th, 2024. Outlined below is how the ELA Steering Committee will be leading the pilot teacher team in making a recommendation for adoption to the Instructional Council.
January 23, 2024 - K-8 ELA Steering Committee Meeting -
4:15 - 5:15 p.m. Video presentation and discussion of both Pilot Programs
February 20, 2024 - Pilot Open House at the Halik Center - 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
K-8 Staff are invited to review physical materials of each program, video presentations, as well as have an opportunity to hear from a panel of pilot teachers sharing their experiences with both programs.
March 13, 2024 - Voting for Pilot Teachers
Pilot Teachers will be voting on program recommendations.
March 20, 2024 - Instructional Council - 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Steering Committee will present the recommendation made to Instructional Council
April 23, 2024 - K - 8 ELA Steering Committee Meeting - 4:15 - 5:15 p.m.
Sharing results from Instructional Council presentation and all transparency from pilot teacher votes.
May 23, 2024 - K-8 ELA Steering Committee - 4:15 - 5:15 p.m.
Discussion and planning of Teacher and Administrator professional learning for new curriculum
9-12 Update
Our pilot teachers will kick off implementation of two new curricular tools this spring. They will be exploring myPerspectives from Savvas and MAISA from the Oakland Michigan ISD. Outlined below is how the ELA Steering Committee will be leading the pilot teacher team in making a recommendation for adoption to the Instructional Council.
January 26, 2024- required virtual training for all ELA pilot teachers. Newsela Formative is the program we will be utilizing for data collection to assess the efficacy of our pilot choices.
February 15, 2024 - Pilot training and teacher collaboration time at the Halil (required for all 9-12 pilot teachers)
March/April 2024 - Pilot implementation
March 12, 2024 - 9-12 ELA Steering Committee - 3:00-4:00 p.m.
Pilot check-in, data collection
April 16, 2024 - 9-12 ELA Steering Committee - 3:00-4:00 p.m.
