Environmental upgrades at Joseph Case High School

Over the April break, we replaced two bubblers with hydration stations to fill water bottles. One is located near the gym entrance; the other on the second floor in the learning center. New front doors were installed at Joseph Case High School that are structurally safer and better insulated, saving energy as well.

Effective May 1, Swansea Public schools will embark on a new effort for single stream recycling in classrooms, offices, cafeteria and kitchens. More detail will be provided to students in their advisory period on Wednesday, May 6.

Our sincere thanks to Superintendent Bob Monteiro for both these upgrades and the new partnership with E.O.M.S. Recycling.

Case students travel to Spain, Portugal during April break

Twenty-four Case students traveled to Spain and Portugal during the recent April break. Led by Case foreign language teachers Carmelia Silva and Catia Pereira, Case students had the authentic learning opportunity to practice their foreign language of choice while bearing witness to the cultural highlights of two European nations. Below are some photos of the trip and its departure from Swansea.

Fused Glass Workshop

My thanks to Case art teacher Janet Blair who coordinated a Fused Glass Workshop with Glass Artist Deenie Pacik Giuliano on Tuesday, April 14. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Swansea Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Pacik Giuliano shared her expertise and craftsmanship during a 2¼ hour workshop and presentation. Sculpture and Foundation Drawing art students will learn about the technology available to contemporary glass artists, future educational opportunities, the role of artists in our community, and the glass industry. Joseph Case High School students’ fused glass work will be on display in the school lobby after the kiln process in late April.

Deenie Pacik Giuliano received her Bachelor in Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After studying glass at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Pacik Giuliano enrolled in several glass internships in the New England area and continued her studies at Pilchuck Glass School. Her commissions include stained glass windows, modern fused glass, and original architectural glass art.

Thank you: Parent Professional Development - Twitter 101

Thank you to the Case families that joined me for a great evening of connecting members of our community to Twitter. Not only did the the evening enable families to get an overview of this popular social media, we had many laughs for about 90 minutes on a Tuesday evening. Next parent professional development opportunity: AP Family Night on Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m., in the auditorium. More details in my reflection below.

Final reflection: Growth Mindset

Dr. Carol Dweck is a Stanford University professor I had the privilege to see in Dallas in February 2014. In education circles, she is well-known for her theories of intelligence, specifically fixed vs, growth mindsets. The graphic below highlights some of Dr. Dweck's thoughts.

I am a firm believer of the growth mindset and continue to advocate and model that you can achieve anything if you are willing to work hard at it.

For example, since October 14, 2014, I have spent a few minutes almost every day chipping away at Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, a daunting 1275-page novel first published in 1869. I finally finished the book on April 14, 2015. I knew if I could commit at least a few minutes each day that I could make this large undertaking manageable.

The same philosophy is analogous to our high school's expansion of AP courses. I encourage student in Grades 10 and 11 to consider taking at least one AP course next year. Get a taste for a college freshman-level course while you are still in high school. Yes, it will be a difficult course requiring you to work harder than ever before -- but if you are willing to put in the time and effort, your dedicated work will pay off.

I am sharing this growth mindset with Case students and their families next Thursday night. Case High AP Family Night is scheduled for May 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the auditorium. All students who plan to enroll in our expanded AP program are invited to bring their families to this one-hour event, sponsored by Mass Insight Education. This evening is also open to all interested students in grades 8-11 and their families who want to know more about the future of AP at Joseph Case High School.

I'm not sure what challenge is next for me yet. But I am thrilled to give your children to opportunity to grow at Joseph Case High School.

Cheers!
Brian
