Junior College/Career Newsletter
March 19, 2020
The Show Must Go On!
Wow - A lot has changed since our last Junior College/Career Workshop and Newsletter. Who would have thought that we'd be spending our first day of spring the way we are?!
Our CODDIWOMPLING skills sure are being put to the test more than anyone could have imagined, given the uncertainty of next steps, flexibility with new ways of learning, and restrictions to our daily lives, in an outside of school!
We won't be able to meet in person for the next few weeks at least, and upon return to being physically present in the school building, your priorities should be finishing your classes strong, so there WON'T be anymore "traditional" in-person Junior College/Career Workshop classes before school ends.
But - There WILL be webinars and individual college planning meetings scheduled virtually, to make sure that - in a new and unexpected way - you leave your junior year feeling just as prepared for college planning as you would have otherwise. I know your email inboxes may be bursting at the virtual seams, but these newsletters are more important than ever!
In the meantime, PLEASE, reach out with anything that's on your mind: ideas for continued college exploration or feedback on your progress thus far, questions about scholarships and financial aid, suggestions for next steps to "stay ahead" in the process, or if you're curious about the status of my roof (still hasn't been fixed - oops.)
I'll be around via Google HangOuts and Email - every day, 8:30am-3:30pm. You can also call me through my Google Voice/Work from Home Number: (920) 350-1196.
Take care,
Mrs Ladell
Junior College Prep WEBINAR: Resume & Activities
Since we can't meet in our typical fashion on Day 2's or Day 5's in the CCC, our Junior College Workshop is going VIRTUAL!
Our first session will focus on building a resume/activity sheet to help with part of your application. While some schools will request or allow you to send your official resume, most will ask you to enter your activities, awards, or accomplishments through various parts of the application.
This 20 minute webinar will guide you through some steps on how to identify important activities/extracurriculars, organize your extracurriculars, and format and report your activities to be ready for your applications.
This webinar will be recorded for all who cannot join in live-time!

AP Exams - Update on 3/20

ACT/SAT Updates
It remains unclear as to whether additional ACT/SAT dates will be added to make up for the cancelled exam, and we may not have any updates on whether new dates will be added until there is more clarity on the ongoing social distancing restrictions across the nation. I will update you as soon as I know more!
In the meantime, there has been a HUGE PUSH for colleges and universities to go "test optional" if only temporarily for the 2020-2021 application season. Most recently, Case Western Reserve University announced their plans to do so. I anticipate more schools to follow suit in the next few weeks/months, to alleviate some of the pressure students already face with their standardized test scores. Check out FairTest.org for an updated list of Test Optional Schools (whether temporarily, in response to test center closings, or as part of their permanent admissions philosophy.)
Virtual College Visits
However, it's unrealistic - especially in light of current events - for families to have enough time, resources, and ability to travel to schools around the country. Luckily, there are MANY resources available - COVID-19 or not - to help you get a taste of what a campus looks like.
- YouVisit.com - offers a "Google Maps Street View" type of experience, where you can click on arrows to navigate a campus virtually, and stop at various buildings/landmarks to hear more from a virtual "guide." *You can access the same YouVisit virtual tours when searching schools on your SCOIR ACCOUNT - the two programs are linked!*
- YouniversityTV - offers 6-10 minute videos sharing highlights of various campuses - academics, social experience, etc.!
- YouTube - as simple as it sounds, almost all schools have a YouTube page. Check out their videos highlighting various areas of their campus and school community. Examples include: University of Arizona Lafayette College (PA) Rockwell Integrated Sciences Building Northern Illinois University - Why NIU Madison College Student Life
- School-led Virtual Tours/Sessions: Check out this list of virtual resources schools are offering specifically in light of COVID-19 closures.
*Remember to save any schools you're following on SCOIR!!*
Extra College Visit Resources
Questions to Ask on your College Visit - Highlight questions that are more important to you, cross out those that aren't, and come into a visit prepared to dig deeper on your priorities.
College Visit Journal/Rubric - Reflect on ALL aspects of a college "fit." This rubric allows you to capture many aspects of what a college can/should offer, and measure how the school fits your priorities.
