21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
On Monday, August 24th, the SCOH welcomed students Back To School for the 2020-2021 year! The new protocols mandated by the CDC and Lake County Department of Health ... along with a global Zoom shutdown ... made for an interesting day :). Not to mention students were returning after a nearly 4 month "summer break" thanks to COVID-19. Some might say it was chaos, but I like to look at it as the beginning of what could become one of our greatest success stories!!
Don't believe me?
Take it from the musical Hamilton ...
You came back, soon you'll see
You'll remember you're a true Brickie
You came back, time will tell
You'll remember that Zoom works swell
Our Bricks shine, opponents fall
We will see each other through it all
And when push comes to shove
We will reach them using Newline boards to remind kids of our love!
See, it all makes sense if we sing it through :)
Da da da dat da ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Volleyball
On Monday, the Lady Brickies traveled to neighborhood rival River Forest for a rematch of last Saturday's pool play at the Hobart Invite. In the 1st match up, Hobart won 2-0. In the 2nd, there was one more game, but the results were the same as the Lady Brickies WON 3-0! In a competitive match throughout, Hobart won 25-15, 25-22 and 25-18 to earn their 3rd win of the season!
Tuesday, it was another rematch from the Hobart Invite ... only this time, the Lady Brickies had some payback on their minds. The Wheeler Lady Bearcats defeated Hobart 2 games to 0 at the tournament - would "round 2" be a different story? This one was an INSTANT CLASSIC! It was back-and-forth during the 1st game with Hobart ultimately earning the win in come-from-behind fashion 25-23! The Lady Brickies BATTLED from behind AGAIN in the 2nd game to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead! In the 3rd game, just when it appeared Wheeler might finally get on the board ... our girls put together a run to gain control and when senior Haley Pint served an ace for the game-winner, the CELEBRATION WAS ON!! Hobart got contributions from all over the place - kills from junior Hannah Mathis and sophomore Gabby Tomich, assists from senior Jessica Fazekas, digs from senior Sasha Thomas, blocks from seniors Abby Dumbauld and Emma Misecko, and lots of HUSTLE from junior Bella Skalba to name a few!!
Thursday, Hobart was On The Road Again (Willie Nelson) to play at Highland High School in the NCC opener for both squads. On SENIOR NIGHT, the Lady Trojans played with a high level of motivation and were able to keep our girls off balance all night. In a closely played game, the Lady Brickies fell by a narrow margin in all 3 sets, 21-25, 19-25, & 19-25.
The Lady Brickies are currently 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. No rest for the weary this week as Hobart has another tough NCC match-up Tuesday at home against KV and comes back the next night to square off versus the Merrillville Pirates. LET'S DO THIS!

SWEET VICTORY!
Soccer
On Monday, the Lady Brickies were scheduled to square off against the Hammond High Wildcats (what team?), but since Hammond schools have canceled their fall sports season, COVID won this one.
Wednesday, Hobart played the GAME OF THE WEEK on the road against Michigan City!
The DYNAMIC DUO of seniors Cecelia Provins and Faith Hillan ... combined with some PHENOMENAL D-D-D-DEFENSE ... carried the Lady Brickies to their 2nd consecutive 'W' by the final score of 2-1! Provins and Hillan each notched their 1st GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL of the season and assisted each other in the process!! GREAT defense, SENSATIONAL passing, AWESOME teamwork - it was simply a GREAT GAME!
The Lady Brickies are 2-1 on the year! After a Monday night road trip to Griffith, they will open NCC play right here at The Brickyard against Munster on Tuesday! LET'S GO!!!
Boys
The Brickies have had two of their 4 scheduled games postponed or outright canceled due to COVID ... including their lone contest this past week against Hammond Clark. Therefore, Hobart has had plenty of time to get to WORK WORK WORK at practice and continue improving the last 7 days. The UNDEFEATED Brickies (2-0) will FINALLY get back on the field for real Wednesday over at NCC powerhouse Munster. These kids CAN PLAY ... the Northwest Crossroads Conference opener should be a DOOZY!

Football
The offense took a little while to get going against the ENORMOUS Merrillville front 7, but our boys STAYED THE COURSE! After two 3rd quarter Pirate touchdowns made it 23-0, Hobart got on the board when senior quarterback Riley Johnston connected with junior tight end Anthony Williams on a 37-yd TOUCHDOWN pass! The Brickies again drove the length of the field early in the 4th to potentially make it a one-score game, but a penalty negated the touchdown and Merrillville intercepted a 4th down pass to essentially seal the game.
This game was VERY competitive and much closer than the final margin (23-7) on the scoreboard. The EFFORT our boys gave on our home turf was something we can all be VERY PROUD of. The defending IHSAA Regional Champion Pirates are a legit contender to reach Indy on Thanksgiving weekend in Indiana's largest class. As much as we all wanted a win on Friday, this loss should give our boys CONFIDENCE moving forward that we can play with absolutely anyone. The goal remains the same ... to PLAY 15 ... and lessons learned on Friday will serve the Brickies well in October & November.
Next Friday Hobart welcomes Griffith to The Brickyard for SENIOR NIGHT ... LET'S GO!!

Boys Tennis
Tennis anyone?
Thursday was SENIOR NIGHT for the Brickies and the opponent was NCC foe Kankakee Valley. After honoring our OUTSTANDING 4 seniors - #1 singles Max Jancich, #2 singles Carter Mohr, #1 doubles Chad Tomaga and Nick Kolopanis - prior to the match, Hobart went on to KO the Kougars 3-2!! Jancich was a winner at #1 singles, junior Ethan Cover dominated his opponent at #3 singles, and the combo of Tomaga and Kolopanis put the nails in the proverbial coffin by winning in 3 sets at #1 doubles!! What a PERFECT way to celebrate the careers of these fine Brickies - 4 years filled with hard WORK WORK WORK is paying off!!
Hobart is 3-1 so far this fall and 1-0 in NCC action! They've looked very solid from top to bottom and with consistent improvement could be DANGEROUS when the post-season rolls around! LET'S GO BRICKS!!

Girls Golf
The Lady Brickies have been letting things happen in the very best way out on the links!
On Monday, Hobart traveled north to play at Lost Marsh Golf Course in Hammond. The meet pitted our girls against both Griffith and Bishop Noll. Senior Alivia Ahner led the attack and earned medalist honors with a team best score of 48, which included a BIRDIE on #5! Classmate Claire Duca (54), along with the junior trio of Autumn Turley (56), Morgan Sanchez (61), and Brooke Blanchard (62), rounded out the scoring for Hobart as the Lady Brickies shot 219 to best both the Panthers (265) and Warriors (270)!!
Thursday, Hobart welcomed Calumet and LaCrosse to River Pointe for yet another triangular meet. As Alicia Keys might say, "THESE GIRLS WERE ON FIRE!" Hobart shot another season best score (213) as a team and earned another double W!
Finally, on Friday the Lady Brickies closed out the week at Palmira Golf & Country Club in St. John against Hanover Central & Portage. The Lady Indians got the best of Hobart by 17 strokes (212-229), but an incomplete Wildcats squad gave Hobart a split.
Hobart is now 7-4 on the year and poised to keep pushing towards one of the best ("I SAID THE BEST") seasons in recent memory!

Cross Country
Next Tuesday Hobart hosts the 80th HOBART INVITE at Big Maple Lake County Park. 80 years of racing makes the Invite one of the longest running events in the entire state! Proper social distancing at the start line, a shortened course, chip timing for each athlete to eliminate a finish chute, and other measures have been added to ensure the best safety for all student athletes involved. Legendary Brickie coach Frank Kurth started this event back in 1940 ... and there is no way COVID is going to interfere with its birthday celebration!

SHOUT OUT
After 4 months of quarantine and barely 6 weeks of WORK WORK WORK to prepare for the fall season, the Brickies have come out SWINGING! Hobart hasn't just persevered ... we've faced adversity and EXCELLED thus far!! The opportunity to play is a BIG MOTIVATOR ... our kids know what's at stake and we are VERY PROUD of how they - along with our coaching staff - have handled such an impossible situation! COVID is for real and is accompanied by a lot of safety protocols. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
In search of some highlights after 2 weeks of competition? Look no further!
