November 2014: 2nd Quarter
Responsibility!
Kindergarten:
This quarter in Counseling Lessons for Kindergarten, we will be learning about being responsible for yourself and others. We will read the story “Ka-ulu the Strong” a Hawaiian folk tale about the meaning of responsibility. We will read the book “A Bad Case of the Tattle Tongue” by Julia Cook to learn the difference between reporting a problem and tattling. In the third week, we will learn about managing your angry feelings in a responsible way. We have fun activities to go along with each story. Please ask your child about them. Counseling lessons for Kindergarten are in the month of November.
First Grade:
This quarter in Counseling lessons for First Grade, we will be learning about being responsible for yourself and others. We will read the book “Elmer” by David McKee to discuss accepting differences. We will read a story called “Potter Pig and His Empathy Booster Glasses” to learn the meaning of empathy. In the third week, we will watch a storyteller (via DVD) tell the story of “The House that Talked to Itself” to learn about cooperation. We have fun activities to go along with each story, please ask your child about them! Counseling lessons for First Grade were in the month of January.
Second Grade:
This quarter in Counseling lessons for Second grade, we will learn about being responsible by managing angry feelings. We will learn how to “Stop, Name Your Feelings, and Calm Down” by watching an awesome music video. You may hear your child singing in their robot voice! We will also learn the value of Helpful Self Talk by reading the story Pete the Cat. Lastly, we will reflect on our own poor choices when we’re angry and what helps us to calm down best using the concept of a volcano. Please ask your child about what he or she has learned. Papers will be going home with the stamp “Look what we did in our counseling lesson with Mrs. Atkins!” Counseling lessons for second grade will be in December.
Third Grade:
This quarter in Counseling Lessons for Third grade, we will learn about being responsible by Recognizing, Refusing, and Reporting bullying. We use the research-based program called “Steps to Respect.” We will learn that “Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.” We will learn how to be assertive and what to do to stand up for yourself. We will also practice using assertiveness to ask a person who is bullying you to stop. Please ask your child about what we learned! Counseling Lessons for third grade will be in December.
Fourth Grade:
This quarter in Counseling Lessons for Fourth grade, we will learn about being responsible by Recognizing, Refusing, and Reporting bullying. We will use the research-based program called “Steps to Respect.” We will learn that “Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.” We will learn the difference between teasing and bullying by reading portions of the book “Just Kidding” by Trudy Ludwig. We will also learn how to be assertive and ask the person who is bullying you to stop. Please ask your child about what they have learned! Counseling lessons for Fourth Grade were in the month of January.
Fifth Grade:
This quarter in Counseling Lessons for Fifth grade, we will learn about being responsible by Recognizing, Refusing, and Reporting bullying. We will use the research-based program called “Steps to Respect.” We will learn that “Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.” We will learn how to stand up to someone who is bullying you. We will explore the powerful impact of the bystander – the person who is nearby when bullying occurs but does not participate. Finally, we will learn how bullying in cyberspace occurs and what to do about it. Counseling lessons for Fifth Grade will be in the month of November.
