Project Lead the Way: The Ice Pop Challenge
We continued our Project Lead the Way unit this week. The campers worked in their science book to learn about matter and it's properties. We have discovered matter comes in three forms: liquid, solid, and gas. The closeness of the molecules are what create each type of matter. Some matter can be changed and changed back or can be reversed. Some cannot be reversed. Types of matter can be combined like a solid and liquid. An example would be a glass of ice water. We have also observed matter to see it's texture, color, weight, and appearance. We have been working hard to become matter experts and load our brains with information that will guide our project!
We are building up to creating a solution to our ice pop problem. How can we keep ice pops cool if we have forgotten the cooler? We have started to think about materials to build and what might be best. We have also brainstormed size, shape, open or closed containers, partners or on our own. Next week we will get busy planning and put our plans into action! Stay tuned!
Folk tales are in our Seesaw portfolios! We will begin learning to write about our opinions in our next writing unit! I am excited to hear what the campers feel strongly about and hear their reasons and support for their feelings . I am even more excited to learn with them to create great writing so others may hear what they think!

Closing Unit 2 and Finding our Strategies
This week we closed unit 2 on addition and subtraction. The campers have worked hard to understand subtracting with multi digit numbers and try our several strategies. Three if these can be seen below. We also began our mini subtraction timed activities. The campers begin each 'strip' and when finished look at the timer and record their time. They rate how they did based on time but also on accuracy and efficiency. We will work through the subtraction families and once a week will be a choice day. The campers will choose the facts they need most work on again based on time, accuracy, and efficiency. We will also continue the use of our own flash cards and triangles. Fact fluency serves as a solid base for our larger calculations and work as a mathematician! Nightly practice can strengthen this!
A fun game to try that will make fact practice a problem solving practice as well is Kakooma on the Greg Tang website. I have linked the game page for his website here. The campers have practiced this in our room but there is also a practice version so they can review! Try it out! It can be a brain teaser!
