Social Media
@ Lakeland Junior Senior High School
Where we have come from.
Back in the 1980's, my childhood, my parents basically had one opportunity to meet with my teacher(s). Parent/Teacher Conferences. A note or newletter sent home and that was about it.
When I began working at Lakeland, conferences were well attended until about 10 years ago when the options of communication went from nil to infinity ∞! General public use of email opened doors of communication in a way that no one could have imagined in the '80's. So, gone were the days of mimeographed newletters and handwritten teachers notes. Why wait for days when responses could be received in mere hours or even ***gasp**** minutes? Why wait for a few months to meet a teacher in a 5 minute meeting when email allowed us to have virtually unlimited contact between parents and teachers? As a result, attendance at parent/teacher conferences has dropped off drastically year after year. Fast forward to 2017 and email has become, for many, an old antiquated tool. It's too slow, we want answers now! Enter the world of social media and smartphones! We now have the ability to update parents in an instantaneous way. Texting has replaced email as the main method of communication. Social Media has become an outlet for information dissemination to our teens and many parents alike.
Ten years ago, as email became a preferred method of communication, many parents were resistant. Five years ago, the texting boom began and parents said "NO!!!" in loud voices. Then, cell phone companies took away per text message costs. We saw an attitude change among parents. Their kids finally taught them the instantaneous magic of the text message. In a recent survey of parents, "texting" was the second most preferred method of parents for communication with the school. Email is still preferred but we see that gap close each year.
Where we are.
Enter Social Media. Many of us remember the days of early social media. MySpace was king among teens and parents were struggling to keep up with the pages and passwords that their kids had. Now, few parents can say that they don't use some form of social media. The choices are endless. While Facebook remains the choice of many parents, students have expressed greater interest in Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat (just to name a few!) as ways for their teachers to communicate. Still, the text message and email remain powerful tools of communication.
I'm confident that we will see social media continue to evolve in the next 5, 10 and 15 years. Technology has brought us a long way and continues to develop in exciting new ways.
Where that puts Lakeland
Where that puts parents
This is practically a how to guide on how to annoy your kids!
To those who say, "but, I don't know how"...
I say, "That's okay, just don't refuse to learn!"
It sounds creepy but feel free to be a lurker!!!
